Be aware that your stuff is public on this forum so even if I don’t ingest it, it’s still findable by anyone/thing with internet access. The ingestion isn’t doing anything fancy with logins.

I’ll get the bot swarm on the job tonight.

This is pretty cool! You should add a “top of all time” section too see the best games.

first of all this is really cool. second. Phew. it doesn’t stalk the project im working on right now or else it would have been spoiled. looks like im not posting it anytime soon until my demo comes out.

The like icon is simply emoji counts from that post on the forum.

Basically a forum post with a game link is what I show. So the emoji count is what you see.

There’s also a click count on any link within the forum. So that’s what drives the click count (and my own click count if you click a game within Makecode games).

Yep I had to limit how old to look back for the initial backfill. If you comment on an old thread it’ll ingest all the games from that thread. And omg the “chat area” thread really tried my (and my machines) patience.

I debated on that but I worried about some timing (lots of people were around at one time that don’t now, etc) and a really old game just living there forever.

So that’s why the “hot” exists instead. It’s a time based stat, basically likes/clicks in the last few periods to keep the list interesting.

It’s modeled after Reddit actually.

Maybe some human picked “best games of all time” perhaps with voting or the like I could see as a fun thing to try… future me.

</div>

There’s no “stalking” 😀
It only parses the public json files that this forum has per thread. So if you want your game to remain hidden, don’t post it.

But come on now, everyone wants to see you game regardless of how “done” it is.

Also it could arrive in the hot/trending well after it’s posted. The ingestion looks at all games it already found to update likes and clicks. So even if your game isn’t done but catches on fire later, it’ll show up.

First of all, yes, I didn’t think anything such as login information was being scraped from the forum (on this scale of ingestion I wouldn’t have assumed it could’ve been done, nor would I have assumed any harmful intentions on your part). I am aware of how your site works as I’ve already looked through the GitHub code for your ingestion/scraping and collecting of forum posts and links. My own personal concerns stem specifically from the presentation and documentation of posted games and how they are handled on your site.
Now moving into the main point of my concerns, you stated:

> [@Kikketer](#):

> Be aware that your stuff is public on this forum so even if I don’t ingest it, it’s still findable by anyone/thing with internet access.

Yes, I acknowledge that all my replies, comments, and links posted under the _jtspeedRun_ username are publicly posted and accessible to everyone on the internet. However, where your site differs from a simple search engine is features like “Newest and Trending” that actively push games to users who might otherwise have a lower chance of seeing them. While this is intentional and logical for engagement, I personally prefer to retain control over how my games are distributed and highlighted. This design choice changes how the forums are traditionally used (where users are first drawn in by a topic title) into something different.
This is purely my opinion and I don’t expect everyone to hold the same beliefs. However, on a broader note, there are times when creators simply prefer not to continue showcasing certain older or specific games.
There are, of course, no legal or moral obligations to listen to any of these requests, but in a tight-knit community space like this, it’s worth making the case. Rather than finding ways around the scraper, it would be great if there were simply a simple tag or opt-out mechanism for creators who prefer not to have their projects included in discovery feeds or some type of requests system (although i’m sure there are many complications involved in doing so).

You could prolly do a list of usernames the bot doesn’t take links from and have a poll on this topic to opt out, i think?

For now going to keep it manual. Adding it to the Makecode games site would require auth/validation. Reporting games is up to Microsoft. And I don’t want this at all to cause any additional thinking/logic that people have to do in the forums themselves.

I’m just categorizing and sorting public data in a different way to help students find inspiration. Other sites like this (and general search engines) already do some of this as-is.

I chose not to have any more interaction since I want all of it to remain in the forum where it’s safe and keep the community centered. Clicking the forum post in a game card is fun and easy. Often I play game for a minute and then am able to quickly click the forum post related to see what the discussions are going on about it.

I’m hoping this helps some of the posts that feel like they got lost are able to come back. And allow students to accidentally find games they may have missed in the endless-scroll of forum posts. While balancing the feedback and discussions we have in the forums.

The gameboy challenge going on has been really fun to see show up, I wouldn’t have even known it was going on otherwise.

Mostly written by bots (I created an IDE for myself to manage swarms of bots for work, so applied that bot swarm here too). This is the future of software engineering and why I love Makecode Arcade because I force myself to actually write the code for these games. Anyway tangent aside.

About every few hours a job will find the last couple days of posts via public endpoints and they are served up as json.

Since posts can’t be edited, it reads from the bottom (newest) until it reaches a post it’s already seen. Any new games it finds it’ll save along with who posted it.

Then any existing games are also just directly poked as well to see if there are new emoji and click counts.

The rest is just views of that data and a search service to help searching be fast. Extensions are currently manually found/added but parsed and documented by a bot to produce the searchable docs (more work needed here). Compilers are some older work I had done as well in my arcade kiosk making adventures. Just ported over.

Fun side notes: it’s all running within free tiers! The most expensive part is the domain which is $30/year.

With all the learning about code and architecture you learn here and in classes you can create almost anything in record time these days. The detailed, intricate development we used to do is now replaced by thinking bigger and being an “engineering manager of bots” now. So keep learning, software engineering still a great profession and things are really exciting with modern tech. It’s just different than it was 6 months ago, and it’ll be different again in another 6.
