I can no longer make Makecode Arcade games

My school has blocked the Makecode Arcade simulator. It was explicitly blocked so this is most likely intentional, even though I was the only one that used Makecode in the school (To my knowledge at least, still, barely anyone used it).

What does this mean?

This means I can no longer make any Makecode games, as I almost exclusively worked on games during school.

Are you going to stop posting on the forums?

Probably not, I’ll try to at least read most of what is posted on here and I might comment occasionally, but it won’t be any games

What’s going to happen to the games in development, like
Layer 6 or Dark Hearts?

I might upload the progress on these two games I have done so far, but I most likely won’t be able to finish either of them

There’s nothing I can really do to get Makecode unblocked, so this will probably be it. I didn’t want to quit making games early but my school administration has force my hand. Hope all of you get to continue making games that we all love.

Goodbye to Makecode Arcade,

@CreativeUsername can you post the output of this page:

they might have accidentally blocked us when trying to block our cdn or something… seems weird to block our simulator specifically.

I’m so sorry about that! do you have a personal computer? or a phone or iPad?

Just one thing, can you use an Alt on a proxy? Idk If Makecode works on a proxy but if it does, maybe that could work? I’d need to know more to help but I can’t really ask so, ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That’s strange i don’t know if your school is just very strict or it was an accident but I’m also the only one In my school who creates games on make code and in class but they haven’t blocked it yet

Also, did they block the entire webpage because if you are trying to sign in and your school makes you use your school account they might’ve blocked your account from signing into it like mine tho I still use it I just signed into Microsoft with it then selected sign in with Microsoft

Most schools blocks only affect the wifi of the school, if you have an alternate wifi you can regain access to makecode

You probably shouldn’t do this, as subverting site blocks is definitely against school rules and could get you in trouble!

My school has an appeal system where you can send the site to admins along with a short explanation to make your… case? Anyways, I used that when my school blocked it. I don’t remember what I wrote, but I believe I mention that

  1. It’s made by Microsoft, so it’s not unsafe at all
  2. It’s an educational resource used by schools around the world

If your school doesn’t have such a process, your teachers 100% have a way to get sites unblocked for students, whether it be an email to admins or just mild admin power themselves. If you have a teacher who you think really likes you (teachers in classes you have good grades in work too!), you could try to make your case to them. You could even go to a counselor or something. If you have good grades and you aren’t coding instead of doing work in class, you can probably make a pretty strong case for yourself. Like @Richard mentioned, it could also just be a mistake, seeing as they didn’t have it blocked for so long.
Good Luck!!!

To explain why it’s blocked, it’s because they blocked all websites related to “Information Technology”, and the simulator specifically gets blocked from that. Sorry, but I didn’t see that earlier. It’s not specifically blocked, but the simulator got blocked from that keyword “Information Technology”. The likelyhood of them unblocking it is very unlikely.
(The reason why they blocked that is likely due to kids finding their way around the blocker, so they were probably trying to block students from adding programs to their Chromebooks and getting around it)

@CreativeUsername i would still love to see the output of the domain tester page if you get a sec!

we get a lot of questions from teachers about what to tell IT admins when makecode is accidentally blocked so this would be a useful data point for me.

Ya, you’re right, even if it would work… Well, not everyone is willing to deal with what could happen if you get busted, and as you said, it is definitely against school rules, but really it is up to @CreativeUsername to decide to do that or not, but even so, I wish CreativeUsername luck

Is it still possible for you to use the share link to play? It’s not a realistic workaround, but it would be interesting to see. Maybe you could split screen that… it would be extremely annoying though.

Ohhhh… I said nothing

Strange, when I look up the link in the first ss, it gets blocked… yet I can use the simulator.

To be honest, I don’t think I can help you much, because I would just be ‘a kid finding their way around the blocker’ :(|

(Also, Makecode can’t be used in some ways, from what I know, so maybe show them you can’t bypass with it, and they’ll unblock it? Honestly, go to the IT people themselves and ask in-person, that tends to speed things up.)
