Storing data / persisting across game start/power cycle

Has there been any thought about persisting data across either game starts or power cycles?

I’m not certain but it appears that the end of game restarts all of the code and all data is initialised?

I was pondering a high score table. Clearly that has to be preserved between games to be useful. It would also be nice if it could be (optionally) preserved across power cycles. My recollection is that wasn’t done on real Arcade machines across power cycles but they probably had other motives.
