The Picnic Basket: Arcade MakeCode COZY Game Jam Submission

Alright folks, it’s finally here! Introducing my game, The Picnic Basket! This cafe-themed game was made for the MakeCode Arcade Cozy Jam. I had this idea of making a game with, like, an ALMOST INFINITE number of conversations and dialogue. You know, a game meant to be played over a long period of time. It has a few references to The MakeCode Forums (TMF). For those of you who know TMF, you’ll find a rare few references if you max out your trust levels…

In this game, you’ll find yourself seated across from one of five distinct characters: Amara, Leo, Nia, Elliot, or Riley. Each character brings a unique personality. Every time you start a new game, luck decides who your companion will be. Will it be a brand-new face, or will you find someone familiar?

The trust system is basically the heart of the game, shaping the core of the interactions overtime. Each character begins with a base trust level of 3, and with a bit of luck after conversations—and whether you choose to pay for the coffee— it affects how much they grow to trust you. As trust increases, conversations can change from lighthearted banter to deep exchanges. Achieving a trust level of 10 unlocks the most revealing dialogues, where characters share their dreams, fears, and closely guarded secrets. I kept the trust level hidden, so it’s a surprise when you get new dialogue! I also wanted it to feel less mechanical that way, I felt that the numbers would kinda start to define them.

With 120 possible conversations and an unfathomably PAINFUL 1,058 sentences of dialogue, The Picnic Basket offers an almost idiotic amount of replayability. The plan for The Picnic Basket was kinda just an experiment, but I wanted to show off how you can get more through casual, everyday moments.

P.S. REMEMBER, the game is made to be played over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME, like, over a week maybe. For example, you can come home from school and be like “hey, lemme play the picnic basket real quick”, play it like 3 times, then move on and just play it another time, (I PROMISE IT’S ACTUALLY REALLY FUN LIKE THAT), if you try to play it all in one go, you might completely lose your mind at its slowness. I just kinda wanted a game that can be cozy and not just a one-time-move-on experience, and more of a routine game.

TMF Story…

Gosh… post-TMF 3 is looking very interesting so far. I’m looking to make things for just game jams for the time being, but… in the story, time may have restarted for those locked within the time of the universes, like the forumverse. Based on how the time loop works, the timeline restarts at the beginning, the VERY BEGINNING of TMF1. Yes, with randomuser (you lol) asking about their game. The only difference is that scamma won’t say the game is bad. Everyone will move on in the scenario as if scamma never existed. But THE PLAYER… THE PLAYER remembers everything, and is completely and utterly alone. They wish they stopped scamma before he did this. They wish they had found another solution, some way to keep scamma alive. But now scamma is gone. And worse, no one in any other universe knows who scamma is. Except for THE PLAYER. They’re coping with it on their own, which is why they went to The Picnic Basket Café. Apparently, the characters are somewhat conscious there, a bit like scamma.

I love the replayability, art, and characters! At first I was doubtful I would return to a game many times like you said, but it is actually really fun that way  Very cozy indeed!

What do you mean by that?? You’re really bad at explaining this stuff… is it:

A: The dialogue CHANGED after consecutive times of it being the same.

B: The dialogue isn’t changing, at all, no matter how long I play.

C: The dialogue is constantly changing, it has never been the same once.

If it’s A, that is LITERALLY how the game works. Over time as you gain trust their dialogue will eventually change. The trust can go down if you don’t pay for the coffee, but it’s rare.

If it’s B, you just didn’t play it for long enough, and probably just got unbelievably unlucky. It definitely does change, just keep trying!

If it’s C, then you simply got lucky with the first conversation and didn’t play on after that. You start the game with a trust level of 3. You get you first set of conversations for Trust3 and under, then the next batch for Trust4 to Trust7, then Trust8 to Trust9, and lastly the final set for Trust10, where you get TMF dialogue. You probably moved from Trust3 to 4, got new dialogue, then ceased to play afterwards. Also, keep in mind, each character is not linked to the same Trust system, they’re each seperate, so you’re probably changing between each and getting new dialogue for each. But I don’t see this as a downside, this would be insanely lucky progress!

uh… I dunno if that’s sarcasm, but sorry about the unnecessary comment. I was referring to the game jam.

Now for my real feedback:
(Heavily inspired by @Sarge’s (sorry for the ping) game rating template)

Graphics-

  • Someone take the crayon from the baby!
  • Moderately decent. :heavy_check_mark:
  • Pretty darn good!
  • Impressive as heck!
  • Luke level (nearly unreachable)

Gameplay-

  • I prefer watching paint dry
  • Very meh.
  • Ok.
  • Quite fabulous! :heavy_check_mark:
  • Stupifyingly perplexingly astonishing!

Story-

  • It simply does not have a story. That’s not a bad thing, it just doesn’t have a story at all.
  • Your typical overused plot.
  • Alright.
  • Amazing! :heavy_check_mark:
  • So good that you cry when it has to end.

Butteryness-

  • I quite literally cannot play the game.
  • Seconds per frame.
  • Makes the game unenjoyable
  • Good :heavy_check_mark:
  • buttery smooth :butter:

Difficulty-

  • No difficulty (peaceful) :heavy_check_mark:
  • Easy peasy lemon squeazy
  • Normal
  • Hard
  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

My Actual Review-

The game is very cozy, and that’s just what the objective was: I say, the target was hit and smashed. Now, the gameplay: Of course, it’s very relaxed, and that’s how it’s supposed to be; and playing it a bit every day is actually better than one might expect! The art… I’m not a big fan of it. The titles screen text is… uh… too dithered? I don’t know if that’s a thing, but there’s all of these little annoying ugly specks. I think simpler text with no dithering would’ve worked better. Then there’s the color palette… Meh, to say the least. And the characters look kinda weird; I know what you were trying to achieve but… I think a bit more expression and resolution would’ve actually worked better. The use of the extra efefcts extension is fabulous, however. And finally, the story; as is usual with Mr. @ChimbroDaPro (creator of the incredible TMF series), his story is great.

Overall, pretty good game. Has it’s flaws, but what doesn’t?

4/5

Thanks! Bye,

HOORAAAAAAAAY!

Oh gosh i see it now… i never really worked much on the title

Hmm yeah, I sorta used the same character layout for them all, so they all had this sort of mini-person look to them, just the art style I was tryna do. They look weird sitting down, I can definitely say that… I had a temptation to give each character a highet res. animation when you get them, you know, when their names are in big letters, but the idea was scrapped

Ehe thanks!
