In last week’s weekly topic about favorite fictional characters, there were some conversations around reading, so as something of a follow-up to those talks, we want to know, what are your favorite books or favorite genre of books to read?
Reading might not be for everyone, but it’s always fun to find more people to talk about your favorite books with, so we’re getting bookish this week!
As some of you might have seen last week, I am someone who LOVES reading, and it started for me when I was very young.
My dad would read to my sister and I every night before we could do it ourselves and my favorite series was The Magic Treehouse, especially The Night of the New Magician.
Throughout my elementary school days, I was really into fantasy. The Last Dragon Chronicles series was the first series that I really dug into; followed by Percy Jackson and then the Warrior Cats (the first three series, I think), Eragon, Hunger Games, Divergent; all fantasy and dystopian.
Now, I really like rom-com novels; call me cringe, but they’re slice of life-y and I feel like I learn about myself a bit when I read them, and I find that fun. I still read fantasy from time to time, but it’s no longer my go-to genre.
As far as fiction goes, I enjoy fantasy and sometimes science fiction. I like books like Warriors, Sal & Gabi Break the Universe, and other books similar to those.
As far as non-fiction goes, I’ll always enjoy a cool book about birds, or fighter planes/WWII for that matter!
What’s your favorite bird fact? I think you mentioned that you like bird watching before, and I agree; I love the way that birds behave, but I don’t really know much about birds.
I don’t know um the Christmas pig it’s a good book. I haven’t read in a while.
Or please don’t judge me. Ninjago quest for the lost powers yeah ninjago again.
I should probably read more.
The first chapter book series that I really liked was Percy Jackson, and I read that a LOT. I just read a bunch of random books for a few years, but nothing that really stood out. Then I got into Wings of Fire in Fourth Grade, and got WAY more into that then I did with Percy Jackson. Seriously, it was the only thing I liked for a while. I’m not sure if this was a bit before or after my Wings of Fire craze, but I liked Harry Potter a lot too.
I like the character development in this book. I cant really say anything without spoiling the majority of the book though and I can’t really recommend it since it had mild swearing. Let’s just say the book is exactly what the title says.
I loved reading all of these lol
More recently actually began liking to read classics, like count of monte cristo, war of the worlds, 1984
Also began reading a lot more manga
Sad that I don’t really read much anymore, I used to read like crazy (read Lord of the Rings 3 times now) just really busy
Love the Dune series, but gets a bit too dense by the 4th book
The book I’m reading might be hard for me to explain without showing you so here’s an Amazon link. Amazon yay.
The book is called the greatest treasure hunt in history. It’s about the expensive paintings that were stolen in World war 1 or 2 I don’t remember which war.
So cool! I remember learning about the monuments men in a graphic design class I took in high school. It’s kinda wild how important their efforts were. It’s hard to imagine a world without so many of the great art pieces and movements we know about today; and if there weren’t people actively saving art, it’s possible it would be lost!
I’m not much of a reader, but there is one book series that I hold dear. It’s a very obscure book series, called Traces by Malcolm Rose. It’s a 6 book series, and each is just as if not more interesting than the last.
It follows a young investigator in a sort-of dystopian alternate world, solving mysteries (mainly surrounding murder). Not everyone’s cup of tea, but if any of that sounds appealing, please give it a try - you won’t regret it. (and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t like reading and was kind of pushed into reading the first book by his mom but ended up reading the other 5 at his own volition)
I hate to admit it but there’s something very appealing about 2000s rom-com movies. (Usually involving Hugh Grant)
Oh man, where do I even start with Harry Potter?! It’s seriously the best. Like, I know it’s a super popular series and all, but it’s soooo good that it’s totally worth all the hype. I can remember the first time I read Sorcerer’s Stone, I was just glued to the pages the whole time. I think the Chamber of Secrets is what OFFICIALLY MADE ME SNAP.
And don’t even get me started on Hogwarts - I would give anything to go to that school. Can you imagine learning all those cool spells and potions? And Quidditch looks so awesome too, I’d love to try out for the Ravenclaw team (if any of it existed lol). Not to mention the feasts in the Great Hall must be epic. Plus it just looks like the coziest, most magical place ever. I bet it feels like a real home for all the students.
As for the characters, they’re all so memorable and loveable in their own ways. But Harry, Ron, and Hermione will always have a special place in my heart - their friendship is so cool. And can you believe how much they grow and change over the course of the books? It’s really amazing to watch them evolve.
I love when they moved more towards the Ministry of Magic and the magical government too!
And the plotlines… they just kept getting more complex and exciting with each new book. The Goblet of Fire had me lost in it for weeks. Not to mention all the plot twists always left me shaking. J.K. Rowling just lost it…
Jeez, I could go on for an eternity, but I have to stop somewhere. I did a test on the official website and I’m a Ravenclaw. Here’s what Hogwarts House I think some of you would be in:
