Here are a couple ideas of mine:
You should have an air meter that, if it runs out, you have to resurface and do another dive, but you should also be able to refill it (partially) by capturing small fish. And you should also have a depth meter, and a damage meter.

Oh and also, prepare your selfs because this next update will have a BIG explosion of life!
(kinda like the cambrian explosion but yeah)
