Arcade Adventure - An intro to Makecode JavaScript

I’ve seen a lot of great games here on the forums but not one of them has been coded in JS. If you are new to this us i recommend using blocks. if you’ve been coding for some time just read the notes it really helps. JS can do many more things than blocks like setting a different color for the standard life and score and timer blocks. Arcade Adventure is a precoded game designed to be an example. While I, personally, prefer blocks, there are many great games made using JavaScript! One I can think of off the top of my head is Space Ricks 3D, but there are many many many more if you look for them. Also, I can get all of those JavaScript exclusive features with WoofWoofs awesome extension, so it really is just a matter of preference.

Welcome to the forum! I really like this idea, as I don’t see many games being made in JavaScript besides my own and a select few users, but I noticed a few issues with your game.

First, the game contains a notable bug, being that jumpAble is not set to True when the player is on the ground. This creates an inconsistent behavior where sometimes the player cannot jump in the air after falling off a platform instead of jumping off of it, but sometimes they can if they jumped without double jumping before falling off.

Second, this is a really great idea, but many of the comments are unhelpful or grammatically incorrect. I would be glad to help fix these issues, because I do think that javaScript example games are a really good idea! Let me know if you want help fixing these issues.

I started using JS recently and just by using classes it was much better than blocks. I found out that you can create different files in the explorer and you can make “extensions” for your game, so if I want to I can keep the main code in blocks and move the object things into JS.

I wouldn’t say my games are… beginner friendly… like at all, though I do try to comment things. The comments I write wouldn’t help you learn like this project could. It would be something you read after you’ve made a thing or two. I have been thinking I should learn how to make tutorials to make a JavaScript one…

The reasons most people don’t code games in JS, is because it’s not actual javascript, I believe that it’s an offspring of Typescript.

Also, block coding is much simpler, and since Makecode surports it, it’s what people generally tend to lean towards using.

If I wanted to code a game with a script base language, I, for one, would not use Makecode, because Makecode limit’s you to just two languages, (one of which is not great.) And also because, like I stated earlier, Makecode’s “JS” is it’s own language. Sure, it helped me learn Typescript alot fasterr than I would have, but, Makecode’s main language is blocks, so that’s what people tend to use.
