Art help please!

Could anybody help me in making art. I am an amateur in it. Also explain to me about character frames.

Well, what do you want to draw? And what kind of character frames are you talking about?

@RizeUpDev, I would like to help you but I’m not exactly great at character-ing anything.

Sure! Maybe you could show what art you’ve made and I can tell you how to make it more polished?
Also, what do you mean by character frames? (Like animations?)

Well, I’m taking general for both. Basically in game making. I am making Dashbound and I need to make good art and stuff.

That’s no problem! You’re actually good at art!

Well this is the best art I got:-

And by character frames, I mean animations.

Honestly, that looks pretty much finished to me, I’m a big fan of simplistic and colorful art styles! But, if you want some suggestions:

  • You could make the character’s shoulders one less wide to be more anatomically correct, and perhaps raise the legs up a pixel and lower the arms down a pixel as well. (These are generally more ‘realistic’ proportions, but many artstyles use other proportions, so you can totally choose to change it)
  • If you want to make the character feel more detailed, you could make the head bigger to fit more detail and add a shirt pattern
  • You may already know this, but your character will look more realistic if you draw it from different angles depending on which way it’s facing; I’ve shown what I mean in the link below by having one character sprite for each direction!

Here’s a sprite with my improvements, but its your choice if you agree with my feedback:

And here’s my best explanation of how animations work and how to make them:

  • To preface, animations are a sequence of images played quickly to make the character look like it’s moving
  • To animate a character, I’d suggest starting by drawing the main poses (These are called ‘keyframes’)-- for a walk, that would be having your left leg forward and having your right leg backward.
  • Then, once those look good, you can add new frames in-between the existing ones (these are called ‘in-betweens’)-- MakeCode has a built in ‘onion skin’ tool in the bottom left corner:

It lets you see what the previous frame is so you can trace over it with the next pose in the sequence.
  • Finally, one of the crucial parts of making an animation look good is just the timing! Play around with different speeds to see what feels most like walking.
  • After that, you can add optional details: I like to ‘shade’ the leg and arm farther from us (such as in this case, the left leg is a darker blue) so it is a different color, that way you can tell them apart easier. I also changed the arm and leg positions in the animation to be a bit more realistic according to the ‘animating walk cycles’ guide below.

Here’s the link to the new sprite and the sample animation I made! (In the assets tab.) If you want to learn more I’d suggest this video about making pixel art for video games and this amazing short video on how to animate walking. LMK if this helps or if you have further questions!
