The length of someoneās hair does not determine their gender. Firstly because gender is an identity, not a hairstyle (or any particular way of dressing), and secondly because hair is highly cultural (ex. In some cultures, long hair could be traditionally feminine, masculine, or neither!)
Iām pretty sure the character is not referred to as anything beyond āthe knightā, so treating them as gender-neutral may be best.
