Creating a Hollow Knight demake (a devlog)

I’m a fan of Hollow Knight (I don’t have Silksong(yet), sadly), so I decided to make…

This!

I did this in a day or so, and I have animations, an enemy (crawlid), and Geo. Press A to jump and B to slash.

However, this is just a demo so it doesn’t have:

  • Soul
  • Health
  • Pogoing (working on it)
  • Saving
  • More stuff

And the knight drawing isn’t my art (although I did all the animations myself), because it was just really hard to draw in a low resolution. The rest of the art is mine, though.

Also, big thanks to @richard for his hollow knight game he made on stream (and the rest of the Makecode team, of course!), it helped me with like half of the code (and by the way, is it still being worked on?).

I’m gonna expand it and create like a test area with all the vital features, then recreate the Forgotten Crossroads (and maybe Greenpath, then maybe, just maybe, get all the way to Fog Canyon and City of Tears).

This is so nice! The little animations from when you hit the bug to the effects from when you pick up coins is great. Keep working on this :upside_down_face:

First of all, thanks for @Carrate_master and @Octodemon for supporting me!

And second of all, I have an announcement.

I made this bench for the game (for those of you who don’t know, benches heal you and act as save points), but I’m not really satisfied with it. So, since I also have to make a ton of unique benches (they vary in size, shape, detail, pretty much everything), anyone at any point (until I stop working on this) can post their own bench design! A couple things you should know:

  • Benches must be at least 10x10 at at most 25x25.
  • Benches should have room for the player and an NPC to sit down on it, side by side.
  • Benches should physically attach to the ground
  • Benches should obviously be a bench, or at least stand out.
  • Benches must retain to the theme (For those who don’t know, Hollow Knight is kinda dark and is based off of bugs).

The art is great, but I think the movement could be a little faster.

I agree with you, but…

In the actual game, you move about that speed (It is kinda annoying).

I’ll put it to a poll:

  • Keep slow walking speed
  • Make walking speed faster

I haven’t played much of hk but I remember moving a lot faster in it

It feels fast, but it actually is pretty slow. Then again, I probably misjudged the speed a tiny bit.

  • Health
  • Dying
  • Extended map
  • Faster walking speed (thanks to @Rune and @DimonSw0rd11 for suggesting this!)

Edit: The benches can be anywhere from 25x25 to 80x80 (this allows for enough room)

This is…

A lot of code (not really but it looks like it).

Anyway, The next update (it’ll be a big one) will include:

  • Soul
  • Vengefly enemy
  • Spikes
  • Respawning/Benches
  • Knockback
  • Minor glitch fixes
  • Basic map
  • Those rocks with Geo in them
  • Shops
  • Charms? (might not be in this update)
  • Possibly a boss

Thanks! I’ll use this bench in the next update. And if you’d like, you can draw some more benches (there’s like 50 different kinds), but ‘benches’ in this game is a broad category, ranging from metal benches like you made, to stone slabs, to bug shells. You could also draw the Last Stag (image below) and it’s side view.

If I finish this game, I may have to try to recreate Silksong…

And I would be so grateful to anyone who draws anything for this game that I haven’t drawn yet, that is the slowest part out of everything else.

I do not plan on doing the following in this update (maybe I’ll do them in 1.5 or 2.0?)

  • False Knight (a boss for those who don’t know)
  • Leaping Husk, Aspid Hunter, and other enemies
  • Shops
  • Charms
  • Vengeful Spirit (a spell for those who don’t know)
