40 Platformer Trials - Platformer Game Demo
Currently only a Demo but it has 30 levels currenly, 6 platformer gimmics and a saving system.

Technically my first MakeCode Arcade game but I have previous block-based game development expirience.

Considering Archer has just stated they are continuing this, and im making another game based off this one, i would like some feedback for my first public forum game:

This is an arcade-style game about fishing, chaotic events and an ever-ticking timer.

I plan on primarily improving the replayability and progression in the next game, adding more variety to the abilities beyond just your hook selection, as well as adding a currency that saves between runs (and some more :D)

For a first game, It is decent. Has alot of strengths, but still quite a few problems.
First, the positives:

  • Has a very present Mario vs DK theme

  • Collision is great and works all the time

  • Controls respond 95% of the time.

My main problem is that unfortunantly, i was not told how the hammers work.
The start of the game explained the controls, except for what to do with the hammer. I spent 10 Minutes working out what to do.
I also think that some of the levels were way too long.

This game has potential, but at the moment, it is decent at best.

Review: 4.5/10

I had very mixed feelings about this game, on the one hand, there was nothing truly fundamentally wrong with this game, It works, i know what i am doing, and it ticks all the boxes.
On the other hand, I got quite bored quickly.
I also found a broken strategy that meny i got a score of 673 only moving once.

  1. Choose Anchor
  2. Move to the far left
  3. Wait.

This made the game feel way too easy, even when not using this strategy though, it just did not feel that fun.
Fixing these issues and adding more could make this game a very good game, but for the moment, it just bored me.

Review: 9/10

No joke, one of the best games i have reviewed in a while.
The level design is perfect for the main mechanics, and the focus on wall jumping feels refreshing.
The art and HUD feels like it was ripped straight from the Sega Genisis, and that is a very good thing.
The only minor issue I had was sometimes the wall jumping was a little wonky, but nothing that much and never resulted in death.

Please continue this, and this might be going straight on my Xtron Pro

this is why playtesting is important theres no way i wouldve had ever found such INSANE levels of cheese

I see your points for all the three main issues, heres how i plan to fix some in future games. If you spot any glaring issues with these, i’d love to hear.

Yapping

1: Difficulty
The timer tick speed increase will be changed from how insignificant it is until later to more consistent, so it feels constantly more opressing and still fun. Also the player will actually be told the timer ticks faster every 100 score because i can honestly bet people who play this wouldnt notice.

2: (Lack-there-of) Strategy
Currently, all the player has control over is their hook selection, wich feels more like an add-on than a unique playstyle. Since events in this game are random, and hooks are mostly preferential, i will add a sort of upgrade system in my next game, where you choose events and perks to help actually add strategy and synnergies.

3: (very little) Content
Again, im hoping the variety of perks, events and hook choices make the game more replayable, and hopefully not as boring after a while.

Thank you, however, for taking the time to play my silly fish game and leaving constructive criticism, as that is very important for actually improving.
