Almost 1 year ago for the Heist Jam I made a game called Katandra: Hollow Heist.
This year I started working on another game from the same series called Katandra, after over a month of saying it’ll release next week, it’s finally here…
Before I give you the link, I’m going to tell you basically everything about the game:
Oni Types
The knights who say ni.
Every enemy has their own attack that they do every once in a while.
Boni
Boni are the weakest and most common type of oni.
Every couple seconds they will jump, creating a damaging area of impact on landing.
Oni
Oni are slightly more powerful that Boni.
Every couple seconds they will charge at you, dealing extra damage.
Oxni
Oxni are basically just Oni but better in every way, they’re bigger, stronger and faster.
Every couple seconds they will charge at you, launching you into the air on impact.
Roni
Roni do not go up to you to attack, instead, they’re always trying to get away from you.
Every couple seconds Roni will throw a rock at you, you can hit it with your weapon or ground pound on to destroy it.
Zoni
Zoni are the largest and strongest type of enemy, you need to double jump to get over them because they’re so tall.
Every couple seconds they will jump towards you and create a damaging area on impact.
They’re basically just Boni but 3x the size and strength.
Veloni
Veloni are the fastest type of oni, they go faster the longer they run without being stopped.
Every couple seconds they will dash towards you, dealing extra damage.
Weapons
You don’t get normal weapon names.
All the weapons are fairly equal in power.
Spirit Katana
The Spirit Katana is the starting weapon, it’s your usual melee attack.
It can hit multiple enemies at once, knocks back enemies and deals more damage the closer you are.
Despite being the starting weapon it’s actually really good.
Spirit Shuriken
The Spirit Shuriken is a single target ranged weapon.
In Katandra: Hollow Heist, the power difference between it and the katana was very large, now it’s not.
To balance the shuriken I made it’s damage range based, it deals less damage at close range and more at long range.
It also slows enemies a bit, to help keep them away.
Phantom Claymore
The Phantom Claymore is a bigger and stronger melee weapon, or is it?
The claymore is slow and deals less damage (1 less damage) than the katana in single target combat so you might not think it’s very good, it is.
The claymore’s damage increases for each enemy nearby, it also has stronger knockback than the katana.
Spectral Kunai
The Spectral Kunai is a ranged weapon that pierces enemies but deals a really small amount of damage, it also bounces off walls.
Each time the kunai bounces it’s damage and range increases.
Drift Dagger
The Drift Dagger is a fast, single target melee weapon.
It deals less damage per hit than most weapons but has a 33% chance to deal 3x damage.
Bigger isn’t always better.
Soul Smokebomb
The Soul Smokebomb is a ranged weapon that explodes into a cloud of smoke on impact.
Smoke clouds damage and slow enemies that touch it.
If a cloud of smoke is created within an existing cloud of smoke they will combine into a bigger cloud that slows and damages more.
Additionally, if an enemy is defeated by a cloud of smoke it will explode into a cloud of smoke.
You can get weapons from chests at the end of boss battles and from normal enemies.
Switch weapons with Menu.
Important Extra Information
The player’s name is Lorn.
Controls and Abillites
The player has a few ways to attack without a weapon.
Slide
By pressing down while moving you can slide.
The slide is an attack.
Slide Jump
By jumping while sliding you can do an extra high jump called a slide jump. wow
Ground Pound
By pressing down in midair you can preform a ground pound, if you hit an enemy you will damage them and jump off of them, giving you a chance to ground pound again.
If you hit the ground then you’ll creating a damaging impact area.
Meditate
By holding down while standing still Lorn will Meditate.
Meditating will use spirit energy to heal you, you cannot move or attack while meditating.
The controls in Katandra are just basic controls.
Move to move, A to jump, B to attack. Just normal controls.
There are 2 extra controls.
- Menu to switch weapons.
- Up + Down + A + B at the same time to reset your save progress.
Game Mechanics
Indicators
On the top right side of the screen there are 2 things, an icon and a bar. (The top left is your health, obviously)
The icon is the icon of whatever weapon you’re using, it will disappear when you are not able to attack.
The bar is your energy bar.
The more energy you have, the bigger a damage boost you will get, you can store up to 30 energy, which gives a 30% damage boost.
Energy’s main use is to heal, it costs 5 energy to heal 1 heart.
Enemies
The way enemy spawns work in Katandra is a bit different that usual…
Every few seconds a random type of oni will spawn near you.
Enemies will always drop energy but they have a chance to drop extra hearts and weapons.
Now that you know everything you need to know…
Please tell me what you think of the game, what I can do to improve it and what your favorite weapon is.
Also please report any bugs.
