I’m making the finial installment in my portal series. If you haven’t heard of it, they are platformer puzzle games inspired by portal. For my fourth installment I’ve made 18 levels so far and I’m planning 20-25 total. I Aim to release sometime in January. If you are willing, provide loopable tracks that could fit well within a futuristic puzzle game.
Quality Assurance & Screenshots
Most people would be hesitant to make music for a game that they have not seen. So here are some screenshots:
I love the progress! I can’t wait to see your result! And plenty of my friend love your games as well! I can’t wait for the result of your project and i hope you continue making games for a long time!
Thanks! It’s a big game so it will need a lot of music. Ok, so I have two ideas:
1.There is two major areas in the game. They are like “mirrors” of each other and you can seamlessly shift between them in gameplay. So maybe we could have one continuous theme that becomes altered when you enter the mirror realm. (For example, adding drums or another melody) I would want this to be seamless, This might be tricky to code though. I have an idea on how to do it if you are interested, but if not there is a less complex idea 2.
2.As it is a puzzle game, the puzzles slowly get more complex as I add more elements. Like introducing the cubes and then the lasers in the first game. So every time I introduce a new element we could have a new background theme. These elements would be:
“Cubes”
“Mirror World”
“Portal Gun”
“Tri Portal Gun”
“Unstable Energy Transfer”
“Tractor Beams”
And maybe a boss theme later, but I haven’t coded that boss yet so it would be unfair to ask for music.
The music should be loopable. It shouldn’t be repetitive as someone could be stuck in one puzzle listening to the same music for a long time. I don’t want anything too intense either, but other than that take creative liberties! We could also do a mix of the two ideas if you are up for it.
So I think I’ll do 1 and 2, but I know for certain I can’t code the transition between normal and alternate world, and I don’t know if I can make the music blend perfectly, but I can try… I’m gonna start making something simple while this gets approved so I can show it to you and kinda figure out what style exactly you’re looking for. We can work out the details when you respond.
You don’t have to code this, I can. But if you want to here is the idea for seamless “mirror world music” transitions:
My idea is to use the one game update loops (which would stay on tempo unless original song is interrupted) to make the second track. Here is a sample.
It has a visual where a sprite hits the ground every 1000ms. The “on game 1000ms update” loop is played at the exact same time regardless of when you start or stop the second track.
Oooh, this is pretty smart! Although I think the 1000ms trick is a tad off the beat in the sample you sent, but I guess you can be exact by calculating with bpm.
Also, I think I get what kind of song you want! I think I can cook something up pretty decent. I only made the last one sound ‘depressing’ because I’m used to composing songs of that style. That doesn’t mean I can’t try other styles.
Yeah you’re right it’s totally off. But I’m glad you get the point. Thanks again for the help! Also the cubes theme doesn’t need a mirror world variant because it’s not accessible yet.
First track no later than day past tmrw, we adjust it a bit and then I’m busy for the holidays and can continue in january. If you can’t wait so long maybe try something out yourself or hire a temporary (or permanent if you want) replacement. Sry!
