Questions about a potential game I wanted to make

Well, I’ve been working on a Coneguy model based off of a Mario model with 300 triangles, although I’m probably going to need to get even simpler. Almost like the low-poly model of Mario from SM64, but slightly more detailed.

Speaking of, does anyone have access to the model? Here are some pictures if you don’t know what I’m talking about:

I don’t think I’m explaining myself enough. Makecode arcade has a 15-color palette, so shading would look pretty ugly even with serious dithering. without shading, models do not have to be as detailed because people won’t even be able to see them (especially with a tiny screen resolution). That 3d dino I made a while ago only had 90 triangles. and I would have done less if the dino was going to be small instead of taking up the whole screen.

also, using a model with a bunch of squares is not very good on the performance side. a single square has 8 vertices and 12 triangles!

Well, yes, but I was just trying to compare it with something else. Thank you for the clarification though!

TWELVE? I thought it had 2, what happened!

Two right triangles make up a side, 6 sides * 2 = 12 triangles

Pff my brain just ironed it out and read it as cubes in the first place, hence my response

Hey, hey! This is slightly off-topic, but it’s very important! (kind of-)

As you can see by this drawing that I made in my science class (yes, really,) I have a reference sheet for Coneguy now! This means that these changes I made would probably carry over when I make his model (if I can get it to look good while still being very low-poly, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.)

Here are all the changes I’ve made to him:

  1. He has more puffy hair, to make it a more pronounced part of his design.
  2. The bottom of his cone looks more blocky, which is just to match the way real-life traffic cones look.
  3. I gave him white fingerless gloves because I thought it was weird he didn’t have them already and I thought it would help to distribute his colors better.
  4. He’s slightly taller (he used to be just 5 foot but now he’s 5’5,) so this would make him taller than Mario but smaller than Luigi (not counting the traffic cone, of course.)
  5. He has freckles now. Why? Because I thought it would fit his design and personality (which it did).

Hope you guys like this design!

(Oh boy, it would sure be a shame if this was posted on Monday and not Friday…)

Yo @TheConeGuy do you have platformer sprites for him, i can maybe make a game with him.

I was literally just making some right now. These are made in the SMB1 style. Perhaps they could be used in a prequel to Super Coneguy 64 like the SMW2: Yoshi’s Island to SMW.

Each one of these are 16 x 32 by the way, but I’m still finishing the other sprites and Small Coneguy (which has 16 x 16 sprites).

this reminds me of a gameboy color game weirdly enough but still some good stuff

that’s because the gameboy color and the nes both have a max of 3 colors per sprite

Looks like you guys really liked it…so I made a sprite sheet. It’s obviously not finished, but it’s a start.

pixil-gif-drawing (8)

The power-ups at the bottom are the Coneguy versions of the Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Bubble Flower, and Drill Mushroom (the latter two are from the newest Mario game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which you should play now. It’s really good.)

I removed Small Coneguy’s cone hat because it would be impossible to fit his sprites in 16x16 with it. Otherwise, these sprites are directly based off of Coneguy’s updated design.

I also made this alternate version that is completely custom and not based off of anything except the original sprites. I think it looks better because Coneguy’s sprite is bigger (meaning more space for facial expressions, animation, and general polish). It’s still very unfinished, even more than the last one, but that’s because I don’t wanna go all out on the sprites until you guys decide which one you think is better.

So…which one should I go with?

  • The first spritesheet!
  • The second spritesheet!
