I was going to write a counter-argument, but I ran out of arguments, so I have to admit defeat Iām afraid.
HOWEVER
While you make a point, Shrek might not be the best written movie out there. But you canāt claim that itās badly written. It was a fairly original concept with a few twists and turns, but the point is that the story and character development is made to be easy to follow, since it was obviously a film originally targeted for kids. The jokes might not land always, but itās a light-hearted film to watch with the family, with recognizable characters. Not to mention that the animation is pretty good, considering Shrek came out in 2003.
So, Shrek - overrated? maybe. bad? definitely not. It has merit, and I believe itās a relatively solid movie, nostalgia or not

Itās garbage (I really have no time to list ALL of the reasons why, just watch a review on youtube)
Itās poorly thought through (by that I mean itās not thought through at all), it has shallow and surface level characters with meaningless motives, the story sucks, they donāt follow the rules of the Star Wars universe (they completely disregard the way lightsabers work), Rey is a Mary Sue, things kind of just happen for the sake of the plot and so on.
