PREFACE

After I posted the YouTube essay, I asked a few friends about what should my next essay cover, the 3 options that I had on my mind was: Roblox, Wii, and Facebook. All very influential technology on the global scale, and would be pretty good to write about. After a vote, we all decided on doing the Wii for this essay.

Anyways, I ran out of ideas to put in the preface section. So, without further ado, let’s get into the essay now. While you all read this yap below, I’ll probably be working on the next essay in the background.


AN ESSAY ABOUT THE NINTENDO WII

For any avid gamer out there, the name “Nintendo” should be engraved directly into their memory storage. Nintendo has been responsible for coming up with some of the most iconic characters of all time, like Mario or Link. Nintendo has also been responsible for developing some of the most legendary video game consoles of all time as well, with reputations of revolutionizing the gaming industry for years to come. One of these legendary consoles is known as the Nintendo Wii.

After 2001, when Nintendo released the GameCube (which did not sell well), Nintendo decided to drop out of the “graphics and processor” competition against rival gaming companies. Nintendo decided that if they could make a system that appealed to a wider audience, and not just addicted gamers, then they could exceed their competitors in sales. The code name for their new in-development console was “Revolution”. The console eventually got its name as the Wii, which sounds awfully similar to the term “we,” indicating that this was a system made for anyone to play, regardless of age or differences.

When the Wii was released in 2006, it was a massive hit. Your average civilian would either spend several hours waiting in massive lines, or they would all flood in and energetically shuffle around for a chance to purchase the brand-new console. Those civilians weren’t entirely gamers either. These units were quickly sold out on launch, and Nintendo was getting filthy rich from this. Now, a good reason for this popularity was that the Wii was relatively cheap for a video game console, being at $249.99, with other consoles breaking through the $300 barrier. But there are also deeper reasons why it blew up. It was the features themselves.

Perhaps the most impactful part of the Nintendo console was the Wii Remote it came with. What made that remote so impactful? Well, it allowed for 3D motion-sensing in video games. You play the game by moving several of your body parts and letting the game respond to that, rather than just pressing buttons on a controller. A feature that we see applied through new games a lot more often today (e.g., Just Dance 2026).

In the past, companies tried to develop motion-tracking in their consoles (e.g., Sega Activator), but let’s just say that the tracking itself was extremely clunky, slow, headache-inducing, and inaccurate. For the consumers, they had to set up quite a few things (e.g., webcams) on their TV sets before they could actually try out these suboptimal mechanics. Also, trying to implement these mechanics (complex hardware + software) was very expensive for these companies, so it wasn’t exactly a sustainable feature to maintain.

Rather than following in the footsteps of previous consoles, the Wii decided to take motion tracking in a different direction. Rather than having to stuff most of the motion-tracking sensors + cameras onto the TV that you play on, they put most of the sensors directly in the Wii remote’s hardware itself.

Why is this good? If all the sensors + cameras were directly put onto the TV set, then it meant that the console’s algorithms would have to do a full-depth analysis of the camera recordings, which is quite a burden on the console itself, leading to performance taking a hit. But if you put all the sensors in the remote itself, that costly in-depth analysis can be thrown right out the window. Now, let’s get into how all this hardware and software works.

As far as stuff to set up, there is a sensor bar only containing a few infrared LEDs, meant to be placed near the TV set. The Wii remote contains an infrared camera at the very front tip, and the camera lens is basically meant to track those bright LEDs on the sensor bar specifically. Mathematical algorithms are then run to calculate specific information, like your distance, position, and angle from the screen. Tracking the player’s real-life angular position is a very important portion of true motion-tracking. Such mathematical information is then sent to the entire Wii console (via Bluetooth) so it can respond accordingly and efficiently.

As far as tracking movement goes, the Wii remote contains an accelerometer which tracks movements in 3 separate axes (left-and-right, forward-and-back, up-and-down). Tilt on the remote was measured by the gravitational force, and that was measured by the three-axis accelerometer. Granted, this was very useful for the motion-tracking mechanics, but it only dealt with linear movements. Hypothetically, if you tried to swing your arm in a curved manner, the response would not be all that great. So, in 2009, Nintendo would release an accessory with a gyroscope that handles the curves and more complex movement on the client’s end.

There’s also something very genius with how the Wii remote appears on the outside. Compared to most video game controllers, the remote’s layout was very simplistic; it was literally shaped in a way to resemble an actual TV remote, it was not overwhelming or intimidating to learn, and knowing what each button was extremely intuitive. That meant that you did not need to be an experienced gamer to actually have fun playing games on the Nintendo console. This applied very well to the original vision for the Wii, that is, to make gaming accessible to any particular demographic.

As one would expect, the Wii remained at the top of the gaming industry for quite a while after it’s initial 2006 launch, and the once fierce-competitors of Nintendo were left in the dust. Now, these fierce competitors, like XBOX (Microsoft) or Playstation (Sony), tried to copy the Wii. More specifically, the successful motion-tracking mechanics that the console had come with. But none of these ever came close to the successful run of the Nintendo Wii.

Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end. In 2010, the sales of the Wii had begun to fall. Nintendo’s competitors were finally beginning to catch up, and consumers began to shift their attention away. Eventually, Nintendo ended all production of the Wii console in 2013, putting an end to the legendary 7-year run of the iconic console. The Wii had sold a total of over 101,000,000 units by then.

But time-length and the number of copies sold can’t do justice to the total impact that the Wii had on the world. It roped in millions of new people, young and old, into the joy of playing video games. It brought the necessary momentum to construct a new video game genre revolving around motion-controls. And it saved the legendary game-dev company Nintendo from bankruptcy. The cultural reach it had was something truly generational, something that we could only hope to see again from Nintendo or any other gaming company.
