Ok, so I was wondering a lot about how all of you first started using MakeCode. I thought, “I surely can’t be the only one that’s wondering about this.” So that’s what brings us here. I first started using MakeCode Arcade because once in class we were allowed to use code.org for the next hour or so, and because I realized that Scratch isn’t the best tool to make games for me, I found this. And that is how I have been a user of Microsoft MakeCode Arcade since 2020.
Micro:bits, Micro:bits, Micro:bits! I loved PLTW class (like coding and levers and stuff for elementary schoolers) and got bored and started messing around (I think I have a few Micro:bit games somewhere, I might have to find those). I made games for Micro:bits and then moved to Arcade when I found it. Still here a few years later answering questions and making games!
I became a user in Makecode Arcade when Scratch got blocked in my school district and me and my friends found this new coding website.
It was introduced to me in an IT lesson as a way to learn how to code all the way back in 2020. It wasn’t until I found the forum that I began to make good games.
Same thing with me about the forum. It blew my mind how many cool projects were created, and most of my good ones were remixes.
i took a class then continued using it and now im here lol
thanks to school i discovered makecode arcade, tried doing a game but it was bad so i quitted, then a few weeks later i tried again but that time it was better, then tried doing more games but they were horrendous (didn’t quitted, some of them were posted in the forum, plz don’t try them) the only good thing i have finished is a rickroll, right now i’m working on a game for the mini game jam, a platformer that i deleted long ago but restarted (this is the game were chin chang came from) and a fighting game that i don’t know if (when finished) i should post it, i don’t know if it will be good, or the comunity will like it.
For me the story starts somewhat similarly to most, in school, however I did not pay much attention to makecode when we were actually using it it in school. My interest was sparked almost a year later when I somehow rediscovered it. I’m pretty sure it was then when I stumbled upon the forum on the homepage when searching for more games.
It was a long long time ago. During quarantine my coding teacher introduced us to it. I thought it was going to be a normal boring coding website we had to do an assignment on. However it was different. The freedom to make games and mess around with things got me hooked. I made some pretty bad games but I was proud of them. I kept teaching myself with experimenting with the code. Eventually I became the coder I am today.
I took some class in a library about micro:bits, and stubled across the ‘arcade’ part of the forums! (Hey, without the forum, i wouldn’t be doing makecode arcade!)
I honestly can’t believe how similar this is to how I did it. It almost seems like we were in the same class or something…
I Started using Makecode in my Computer science class during the 2020 school year. Since I was in 6th grade at the time and was new to middle school and the fact that my classes were online due to the pandemic, I missed 3 WEEKS Of that class thinking I had a break or a free period or something . When I finally showed up I was VERY confused about what was going on. But I ended up getting the hang of things and, actually PASSED my Makecode class! 1 Year passes and…here I am! #2 Most Know Makecode user!
XD Oh nooo!!! That was my NIGHTMARE in 6th. I once got so panicked trying to find ‘spanish 1’ that i rushed to the top floor and went into some 8th grade class! (looking back, 8th graders aren’t that scary, but they looked like ADULTS compared to me.)
EXACTLY! Back when I was in 6th and 7th grade, 8th graders were TERRIFIYING to me! Now as a 9th grader they look so…Small…
I mean, they are much more scary when you’re shorter than them.
Eighth graders aren’t scary. As a former eighth grader myself, I took a glance down memory lane. And I conclude, that seventh graders are a bit worse.
I just feel that eighth graders are a lot more tame then seventh graders. And sixth graders are typically super little, so nothing to scary there.
That being said, it depends where you’ve gone or enrolled (of course.)
Looking back on this I regret not paying attention much because they held a gamemaking competition, and the best game won an award. I didn’t participate, only a few people did and they made very basic games by following tutorials. The winner got a Meowbit! Can you believe that? If I knew how much I’d value makecode nowdays, and how useful that would have been, I definitely would have competed then
as a 7th grader, I have no words.
As an 8th grader now, who is as tall as some 12th graders I can say that I have scared quite a few people.
