Hair Salon Game Dev

Hehe, I gave him the ol’ Picard:

Anyways, this game is really coming together! The color pallets definitely works for the skin, but I feel the tools look off.

That hair cut looks really good. I was thinking about starting a new topic once the game is finished just to see everyone’s unique and funny hair styles! But that’s in the future.

I agree that the tools look off-colored. Should I change some colors?
Would someone else like to make the tool art?

Ok. Here’s the new update:

New changes:

  1. New UI. I added buttons for scrolling in the tool bar.
  2. New Hair crimper and ironer.
  3. New hair paint can for changing the color!

I also gave each new item a sound effect. If someone else would like to help with sound effects, they may. I also am not sure about the art yet.

In my next update I hope to add different people to work on and hopefully a title screen!

What do you guys think about this update?

So right now, I’m working on the title screen and different modes. There’ll be a “Free Play” mode and a “Story Mode”.

Once I get those updates I’ll post it in here.

I think it would be fun to have user’s profiles as a character that you can barber. For example, in story mode people come up to your barber shop and ask for their hair done, and these people are randomly selected, so maybe it would be cool to see @Sarge or @richard walk in and ask for a haircut!

I kind of shot myself in the foot for making my profile picture just text. That wouldn’t make sense for a cursive “BLADEr” to walk in and ask for a haircut,
but who would like to be included as a character if this it happens?

maybe this could be helpful?? Its good to understand the fundamentals of the face before trying to make a stylised version. Drawing heads is really hard tho…

Also i think that shading the hair vertically instead of alternating bands would look better, it just is more similar to how light actually interacts with the hair. You can kinda see it below in an artwork i did last year:

And then maybe keep like a few hair “groups” that are still seperated with linework or shading like one or two groups that make up the fringe and a few for the side, and some for the back for longer hair (which can be darker to make it feel further away?)

Thank you so much, Luke! I agree with you; the hair right now looks a little flat and could use some shading. I was actually thinking a while back to give the segments gradients, so you could set one segment’s fill color to be something else and the color would either dither or flat shade into the next color.

Thanks for the tips on heads, too! I’m thinking about doing the heads myself if I can get good at it. I think I like the Anime-style, actually. I think I’ll go with that style and see if it fits.

@BitBot, I do still want your help if you are still offering! If you are still helping with the heads, can you make them in that anime style? Just regular faces for now; we can work on profile pics later.

@Octodemon and @randomuser, could you give me your ideas on style, too? I Like all three of your guys’ games that you’ve made, and I want to hear more perspectives on where this game should go.

I’m messing around with the hair shading and I’m not finding anything that looks good.

I added a new block to the softbody extension that allows for per-segment color filling. I was trying dither, but it didn’t look right so I kept it flat-ramp. It might be more difficult than I thought to make the shading you suggested. It might be hard to get good pixel-perfect looks with procedural animation. I’m still thinking about what art style I want it to be; really focused on code right now.

It’s almost the end of the month and I will work on this as hard as I can because I promised myself I would finish it by the end of the month.

What if a corgi comes in and then you have to cut off all his hair, and then he regrets it because he looks ugly and his date won’t like him and then he tries to kill you but then the big bad wolf comes in and boomboompows him and then he dies and the wolf saves you and in exchange you tell everyone that the big bad wolf isn’t actually a bad guy and the books were made up and they start to think of a wolf as a good guy but they’re not convinced because you’re just a random barber so then they make up a rumor that you’re actually conspiring with the wolf to eat everyone in town so everybody calls the cops on you and you get arrested but then the corgis date comes and beats up everyone in the jail and saves you and reveals that it’s actually a famous superhero that nobody could identify and thought was just an alien and then the secret gets leaked and everyone thinks that the corgis date is ALSO conspiring with the wolf so everyone hunts her down and succesfully kill her but she secretly escaped so now you’re in prison waiting to be saved.

So in short, just add a corgi please.

Hey since you called I thought I’d give my input!
I really do just have some feedback on keeping your style consistent in a game.

As an example here are two sprites I’ve made for a game that I’ve never released on the forums. But really you’d expect them to be from different games because of how different they look right?
image
Here’s an easier example. I’m making a new font for a game but something seems off. The D right?

The conclusion here is there are that things don’t really match in relation to other things, which in the end just looks odd or off and leads to a game looking unpolished.
I see that to a minor degree in this game and not to worry because it isn’t too hard to fix!

I’m sure you know this but these items up here use the most colors and are the only items here that have an outline of some sort. However compared to some of the other items which have very little color usage they stand out a lot and I feel don’t really match with the rest of them.

The comb and scissors for example just use 2 colors and have no outline. Maybe you can see what I’m saying here but in comparison to the two tools I just talked about, the two tools I mentioned originally stand out a lot and look kind of off to me so here’s my idea to fix them

(Before)

(After)

So here’s my little redo for the first item. It uses a lot less colors and I think feels more in line with the design of the other tools
(Before)

(After)

(This was my reference for both btw)

This one uses 4 colors but I let myself use some more so the player can still tell what this does just by looking at it. But overall these designs to me feel more in line with the others in contrast to the previous designs. The previous designs to me looked over complicated compared to the others and I tried to simplify them enough so they fit with the style of your game. If you want to use these feel free and you don’t need to credit me, but overall that’s my small little nitpick on the visual side of things. If you have any questions please ask and I’m happy to give my feedback anytime :upside_down_face:

Thank you so much for you advice! That does make a lot of sense and I didn’t even realize that!

I was planning on changing the tools because I noticed how off they looked as well.
Next update, I’ll change the tools to match the style I’m going.

I’m having a hard time choosing an art style because I have the bold/flat appearance of the procedural animation, but want the sharp anime style.
I think I’m going to stick with a graphic novel style because that’s closest to the flat anime style I’m looking for.

Here’s the new update:

I decided that shading the hair would be too difficult, so I kept it flat.
Here are some changes and things I added:

  1. New head sprites. Thank you again @Luke for that short tutorial, it came in very handy and I learned some new things.

  2. Changed the Growth and Colour cans. Thanks again @Octodemon for your advice! I want to change the items again and make them look better, but I’m happy with this for now.

  3. Per-segment Coloring. You can now color the hair per segment so that the whole strand doesn’t change to one color. I actually made this a new block for the softbody extension.

  4. A little UI. I added a title screen with some options (only “free play” does something) and made a mini menu button at the top-left of the screen. I’ll probably change the mini menu to open up when you press the built-in menu button; just to make use of everything.

In the next update I need to make more modes to play in and solidify code so that we can work on art.
