although the idea is fun, this project is way past the scope of any project on makecode arcade.
makecode arcade simply isn’t powerful enough to handle SMB1, let alone even half of sonic CD, even as a game gear demake.
we’ve (me and coneguy) tried something of quarter this thing’s scope (4 stages long, 1 act each) and we were faced with :
3 GB image files
5 minute loading times
laggy gameplay
unnecessarily fast player object because of the velocity system (i know i keep talking about this but this is a problem this project will face so i’m including it here)
the thing is, makecode arcade wasn’t meant for projects with the goal of being an entire game. it was meant to be an educational tool and it’ll make 1 stage tech demos at best, if you can even manage that.
even with all that, i still wish you guys luck on this. and, if you wish, you can build off a sonic engine i’ve tried to make on makecode arcade. the sprites were made by motorroach on spriters resource, with major physics help from the sonic retro physics guide. i highly suggest you go off that guide when implementing the rest of sonic’s moveset.
@babol not sure where this myth of “makecode isn’t made for full games” came from. you can certainly make a full sonic-style game in MakeCode Arcade, and have it run on hardware, if you try.
yes, but i’m pretty sure it can’t make something of a sonic game. what i mean by a full game isn’t something like hebes or celeste pico-8, even though those are great games.
here’s the size of the game i talked in my first post on this topic.
the editor almost crashed opening this, took several minutes to actually open and required 2 page refreshes. it loaded while i was looking for the image file in me and coneguy’s DMs, because i gave up on the editor and decided to find it there. i couldn’t download it from the editor because the thing crashed when i tried to launch or download the image file.
it is literally coneguy’s christmas bash with more rooms.
