Well first I modify the palette with a website called https://lospec.com/palette-list and the Sprite Editor Color View, then I draw all my tilesets and sprites in black (Or the darkest color in the modified palette). Then, I spend a lot of time designing the black spots into a simple design that matches a certain theme. Lastly, I add shades.
Also, this art is all coming from a thirteen year old
