The MakeCode Forums need help!

So as some of you know I’ve basically left the forums. Not really because I got bored of MakeCode or anything like that but rather there has been something plaguing the forums. If we want to be able to keep these forums a place for genuine conversation about MakeCode then we need to find solutions and actually be able to implement them.

The reason I didn’t just make this a post in the “MakeCode Forums are dying, Why?” topic is mostly because that seems to be a bit more about identifying problems than actually finding solutions.

The plague that is spreading is… trashposting. The most random of posts that don’t add anything to the forums and are just meant to be useless and stupid.
I don’t want this to become Microsofts Reddit. I love this community! So, I want to be able to actually come up with some helpful ideas of how we can solve real problems here, and ACTUALLY see them implemented into the forums.

Now I will list a few problems followed by some solutions.

1st Problem: Normalization of trashposting.
Trashposting has become so normal here users barely think about “Is it worth posting?” and more of “will it be super duper funny haha post”. Most of the time ITS NOT!
1st Solution: Being able to report older messages for spam. This may sound kinda basic but if we can go through older topics and look back to about 5-ish months ago to now and be able to report those as spam we can get rid of the normalization of these kinds of posts. Since this would not have been a rule it would obviously not do anything other than delete it. So, no bunches of PMs from system telling you to stop. Maybe just send out an email to everyone explaining the situation or something of that nature. This would stop people from seeing other posts and thinking “Everyone else is doing it, so, I should!”.

2nd Problem: Preventing Future posts from being trashposts.
Trashposting will never truly go away but if we can do our best to keep people thinking about “Is it truly worth posting?” that would make it almost all better.
2nd Solution: To this I propose new UI. When you make a post, it says something along the lines of “It will be a bit for mods to look over it so hold on”. Adding some more text to that message might be very helpful! Adding just a line or 2 saying “Remember posts should add something positive to the conversation! It might help to look over your message again to make sure it’s wanted and needed.”

3rd Problem + Solution: Reporting trashposting. There isn’t really a good way to specifically describe something as a trashpost in the report’s menu. Adding a simple button that says something like “It doesn’t add anything helpful or positive to the conversation” would be a great approach for this issue.

As I now wrap this up, I must say one last thing. You are more than welcome to bring up other problems. However, calling someone out specifically is not okay and is not what this community should be. Keep things vague enough to not target people but simple enough that it can be understood clearly. Calling out specific situations is not okay either. If it’s a onetime thing it’s not much of a regular problem. Saying “oh i saw someone post where someone did this specific thing then that other thing” is targeting even if you don’t include their name.

I hope we, together, as a community can work through and fix this problem!
Have fun on here everyone!
Bye,
- RobbyZero

You’re right, the trashposting isn’t fit for this forums. But I feel like there’s another problem- new user welcomeness (is that a word?) and post interactivity. As you see last year, I wasn’t really welcomed to the forums except by @randomuser. Also, as the result, me and my posts haven’t been really getting attention unlike those who get like 10 likes just for a post. By all this, I feel like I’m really not welcomed, like @Tails.

I agree with you, I joined the forums August last year…? I think… and my latest topic has basically just been and empty void, where I’m posting updates, and no one pays attention to it… I mean, sure, I’m not the best at coding compared to many others on the forum, but still, I see other peoples projects, getting lots of attention, and replies, and… it makes me wonder, have I done anything wrong? Is there something I’m missing???

So, I completely agree that “trashposting” as you call it is bad for most parts of the forums. However, I have mostly seen it in only the Chatting Area and Makecode Memes topics, where that is kind of the point. In other places, I agree that it should be regulated, but maybe reporting is a little too harsh for people who are just silly little guys at heart. (As these people likely are)

These two things are actually good solutions. But makecode does not own Discourse, which is the forum tool that the Makecode Forums are built on, and thus I doubt it would be possible to creat new UIs.

First of all, I would like to say that I, personally, LOVE seeing new members on the forums and do try to support every one I can. You feeling unwelcome makes me kind of feel like I failed. I myself has been a user who has kind of been… present? for the last few years on the forums. Sure, i’ve been there, but I’ve never gotten very popular topics. The thing you have to remember about a community like this is that it is not Facebook. I, and I am sure many other people too, recognise that you are regulars here, and part of the community, simply because you have posted at least three times in the last month.

(i am bad at saying things, all I really wanted to say is that you are an appreciated part of the community and uh… :+1: )

Thanks… but still, I feel like it would be better if people told me, ‘hey, I don’t know how to do this, but, I’ll try and see if someone else does.’ Instead of just, letting me yell into an empty void like I mentioned before

If so, even the smallest post get some recognition. I remember Bird Run 2 being so empty and forgotten that it left eternally.

I don’t think getting likes or attention on topics is important. If it’s a good topic/game people will post on it. I have seen exceptions, but I think this is a good general rule of thumb. Sure popular users almost always will get more attention but that’s because they have more creditably, and people want to interact with them. if you think that someone’s game is not getting attention post on it yourself. Write a detailed review or something. Beat the game, set a high score. See a new user? Help them or greet them. Give them recognition.

I am not trying to lecture anyone, just offering solutions.

@richard I’m wondering if it’s possible for you to make any changes you want to Discourses UI, if you can only make some changes, or if you can’t at all.

Don’t worry @Rune, you haven’t failed! Honestly, I think @CyberCube and @Rune were one of the key supporters that led me to become a dev team… of 1 person ! @CopySprite and @Octodemon were really supportive too!

@RobbyZero you’re right! Trashposting is a big problem in this forum! If you want an example, go check out @MeatballDev’s game Missile Battlegrounds Sorry MeatballDev if my example was offensive! Honestly, the solutions you posted RobbyZero should be applied in this forum. But people should start following the rule themselves!

So @RizeUpDev thank you for your opinions. I really like when this topic gets more active!

However all examples should be made up. That’s why I said no targeting which your example was.

Whichever mod approves this could you just edit out the part about the example please?

Trashposting: The most random of posts that don’t add anything to the forums and are just meant to be useless and stupid.
Missile Battlegrounds: The most non random of a post that does in fact add something to the forums and are just not meant to be useless and stupid.

look, this is a forum about making GAMES and posting said GAMES to be played and get honest criticism on the GAMES
so how is making a GAME and posting it to a forum about making GAMES trashposting

the game itself does in fact add to the forums and if your considering low quality games to be trashposting then I admit MBG is not the best there is absolutely some games that i refuse to name that are worst and would be much better for example

but on a forum about making GAMES any GAMES adds to the forum

i’ve got some power over it, but most is just the built-in discourse ui. i don’t think we’re planning on making any big changes though

Do you really have to put MBG in everything? But, otherwise, for the first time in both of our lives, I sort of agree. Making one low quality game is fine, sure, but i know people on here (Not pointing any fingers) that would make a batch of low quality, rushed games and post them all on a different topic.

Now, as for actual trashposting, yes, i agree that it should stop. So, this is my message to ALL new people on the forum, active or not: ADD TO THE CONVERSATION! This forum is for making games, for pete’s sake!

I feel like Make code out of context was the best place to put Make code trash post. But you know that’s that and this is this.

I’ve only interacted with you like twice but thanks.

I didn’t bring up mbg

also yeah, I post a lot of games that I never end up releasing

its not on purpose, just my attention span

I get a good idea for a game, its amazing and it will be the next big thing, I work on it for a few days and forget about it
