The forum is dying, why?

Yes I know everyone and their mother has made a post regarding many of the members leaving but that’s not what I’m here to talk about. Why is there a sudden wave of people leaving the forum, or at least why do you guys think this is happening?

My theory is that somebody big leaving the forum caused a chain reaction that caused others to leave, and more, and more, and more. Now that large members like @PixelDoodle has left, it’ll probably start to happen more and more, especially if @Sarge leaves as well (Since he’s the most popular member on this forum).

How do we stop it? I don’t know, and I don’t think telling people to simply stop leaving would fix anything.

I just have one thing to say.
I absolutely love this forum, the members making incredible projects and all the competitions and helping eachother is what makes this place so great.

Don’t let it die here…
please…

Hey, chiming in here – it’s always a little sad to see people go or take breaks as you can end up missing interacting with them, but it’s totally normal in any sort of community as well! This happens all the time no matter whether it’s a real life community or an online group, and is extra likely to happen around times when there are lots of holidays, like we are coming up on for a lot of users.

A lot of the time it’s just healthy to take breaks or interact less if things get frustrating or you have other things come up that take priority – an internet community like this one is still available when you’re ready to come back. There’s still a lot messages getting posted every day so it’ll makes its way through .

That said what you’ve said does definitely happen to some degree too! When people decide to take breaks, others might see that and decide it’s a good time as well. As mentioned that’s not a bad thing, it’s happened before / will happen again and most of the time a good portion of people decide to come back pretty quickly as well~

(and as a side note, we’re always workin on improving things in our editors as well, so if / whenever these users do want to come back hopefully they’ll be happy to see some improvements while they took a break  )

Oh, I haven’t left. I’m still sticking around but I’m just really fed up with Makecode’s Corruptions at the moment. If It keeps up then I’ll probably leave. And that leave will probably be a LOOOONG break instead of me quitting. Don’t expect that anytime SUPER close though. Plus I’m not really ready to leave the forum yet. I love this place. I will be using some of my spare coding time to use other game engines at the moment though.

(Also, as I’m writing this…Tomorrow is a special day for me and my relationship with this site. You can’t expect me to quit right before that do you?

I second this notion! just got back from a pretty long hiatus and can honestly say its been pretty cool to come back and see (and this was only a few months mind you) how much this community has advanced! Like were working on Arwings and stuff! (or at least their models but still pretty cool)

I dont no a lot about this and why its happhening by my theroy is that this massive exodus might be my fault by causing loads if arguements on the site and due to pumping out loads of randoms post about things that arent talking about making video games most of the time which maybe or not inspired people to do the same thing. Untop of the random onslot of new users that proably got most veterans to leave.

And also im kinda bored to with the platform, to wait a few hours for something to happhen to only be something i already seen a thousand times before.

To fix all of this prople should get back to making video games or topics pacifcally about makecode things.

pixeldoodle left?

oh wait nvm he’s still here

I’d personally say that the forum breaking apart has to do primarily with two things:

  1. Too little HQ content
  2. Too much spam content

Old users are leaving because times have changed, and the forum is no longer how it used to be - back in the day it was bustling with amazing projects and huge games, yet today it serves as a pseudo social media, full of unfinished collaborations, random posts, arguments - you get the point.

If you want to stop the fallout, the forum must be brought back to order. People need to stop treating this forum as a like just another online social media site, and start focusing on the things this forum is truly about.

No more off-topic stuff, no more posting your progress in 20 threads (or even 2, just keep it in one, please), no more community projects that lead nowhere. But that’s just my 2 cents

It’s probably about the fact that

  • First, sometimes the forum is hard to explore
  • Second, less people are in the mood to create anything (MakeCode can be confusing)
  • Third, people don’t have much ideas
  • And fourth, people would rather use Scratch (scratch.mit.edu) instead

That’s fair, it can be confusing if you don’t know your way around

That’s true as well, but these fluctuations are pretty normal, people just make less stuff when school starts

What? Where in the world did that come from? I think most people using makecode would agree it’s miles better in comparison to scratch on account of both experience with programming but also the community??

I agree with the first but I don’t think the other points are valid people are having ideas but all we get out of it is a low quality post taking about a game concept that goes nowhere.

Yes I think the point on unfinished collaborations is especially sad, I’ve spent hours of my time making art for collaborations yet so many of them are forgotten and unfinished. If someone is going to make a collaborative game, it is expected that they should take charge, organise the collaboration, and work on the game. Games like Roller and Pixel Smash are good examples of this.

High quality content can be hard to make and take a lot of time. And spam
Content is easy to make and little to no effort. I think people have stopped focusing on making good and meaningful full games that are high quality and instead started focusing on popularity and engagement instead. A big game at this point in time will never be as big as some of the random posts people have made and not even close to the amount of engagement you get (unless in this case it’s a colab bug even those aren’t as popular as they used to as most of them never get finished)

People like: @CreativeUsername @UnsignedArduino @PixelDoodle @InvalidProject all make high quality games that people love but those take time and there aren’t that many of us to fill the time between each game post, and of course that’s expected because these games take time witch means there are fewer HQ games altogether, and with less and less people making these games and just moving to low quality off topic stuff it can clutter up the forum and make good games harder to find.

new users being more focused on making low quality off topic posts then meaning full games

I think this has made a bit of a chain reaction where the newer user’s focus when they get to the forum isn’t the high quality games but it’s the low quality off topic content that’s all over the place thus making them pitching in on that and that becoming there focus of the forums

I do think we still have some good games still being posted but it’s getting progressively harder to find then as topics like this show up “ Just wanted to make a pixel smash tierlist” and clutters up the show and tell games area with something that’s not a game and could have just been posted in the pixel smash topic. because of that it gets progressively harder to find topics like this here’s my first game witch just makes viewing the forums as someone how just wants to see and talk about games a night mare. All and all to finish up this rant I just want to see a refocusing in making games on the forums.
