The <RUNE LOGS>

I wanted to type out a short progress update, as only 18 days remain as of writing this.

The game is coming along nicely! The 80/20 rule is working as per usual. The gameplay is pretty much complete and Im waiting on play testing. I’ve got a pretty basic main menu, a track selection menu, and I am now working on the end screen to show everyone’s places. Multiplayer should work, but I haven’t tested it with makecode’s online hosting service yet, so fingers crossed!

As for art, the car I drew really fast at the start of development seems to be permanent. The pallet I’m using is PS Pixel which I found on Lospec.

I would say I’m around 80% complete.

Small update on the game jam. Just 10 days left!

Something I forgot to mention when describing the game is that it also includes constant excelleration. There is no throttle button, you just go.

An issue I’ve been running into is that the game is quite hard to learn. I’ve added an explanation of the controls, but actually using them is another matter. The main issue seams to be telling right from left when your car is upside down, and I’ve got no idea how to fix this. If anyone has suggestions, please post them quick, Im running out of time!

Oh, and the game now has a name! It’s quite basic, but I decided on Hyper Speed, as it felt as though it fit.

Thats it for this log, and I don’t think I’ll post one again before the jam ends. May the best coder win!!!

My jam game, HYPER SPEED, is up now! Here’s a link to the topic. I would love to see people comparing their places on the especially hard tracks, which is why I’ve started a little competition. The first person to provide proof of getting first place on Twisty will be featured in my next big game!

As of posting, there are two jam games based on the sport of racing that have been released other than mine. While these games are both well crafted and quite fun, they both have one flaw: They just aren’t fast! My game is fast. Like, very fast. You should play my game.

(How did Floorit get 20 likes already?! My game has seven! It’s the art, isn’t it.)

So if you haven’t heard there is now a way to do two different screens in multiplayer! I spent some time today messing around, and found that the card-kit extension DOES NOT work with this. (because they aren’t actually sprites)

Instead, I made a hide and seek game. The hider has larger sight but lower speed than the seeker, and who is who is randomly selected.

I just wanted to make this log because this is HUGE news which I will definitely be using more in the future.

In other news, the sports jam winners are to be announced on the 29th! I can’t wait to see what place I get, and whatever Richard’s wrong opinion is this year. Fingers crossed, and may the best game win!

Jam Stream!

Wahoo! The stream earlier today (as of writing this) was really fun, and I tied for third place! If you didn’t know, this is the same place I got in the Heist Jam last fall, which is funny, but I believe in the Heist Jam I was the first mention. I am taking this a 4th place. But in this one I did get second mention, meaning 3rd! Sports was not my favorite theme, but I am really proud of Hyper Speed and anyone reading this should play it if they haven’t already.

It would be really cool if the next jam was something like Tactic Jam, or Strategy Jam. Another really fun one would be Pirate Jam, although there has been a already mini jam with that theme.

Announcement

First things first, NO PROMISES. I’m kind of scared about announcing this because i’m probably going to quit in a week, but I just want to get it out there.

At the moment, I am in early development of a sequel to the best game I’ve made so far, Nine Cores! If you didn’t know, Nine Cores was my game for the Heist Jam. A twin-stick shooter type rouge-like which seemed to be quite popular in the community. (tying for third place as earlier mentioned)

So far, I am still working on the gun system, movement, and the core enemy code, but I have plans for gameplay inspired by Turnip Boy Robs A Bank, and the first Hell Divers game. (mostly the latter)

I just wanted to post progress on Nine Cores 2[1], like a typical devlog or something.

  1. The name is certainly a work in progress. I would prefer a subtitle, like Nine Cores: Agent Nine, but I will have to wait until I come up with the lore in the shower to do that. ↩︎

I was thinking of it the other way around but okay.

You started making Nine Cores 2 just as I started making a sequel to my Heist Jam game…

I’m a little late, but heres another log!

Jokes aside, I’ve definetly got the 80% of the 80/20 rule complete, and now I have to do the boring stuff. I’ve got the basic movement and all of the normal stuff down, but now I have to make it a game. I am having trouble with the repeating of the gun, but I think I will be able to fix that myself.

I also have a few enemy types!

No gif this time, I’m tired.

On another note, I could not pass up on a cursed jam, so I am trying to build a little thing for that aswell. This may delay Nine Cores 2 a little, but I will get back to it after[1].

  1. Still no promises. ↩︎

Quick little log about the wiki.

That’s right, there’s a makecode arcade wiki. As soon as I found out I knew I had to do something about it, so I have been helping in bringing it to a more cohesive state. I’ve added my game jam games, and made some other minor changes to some pages, but now is time for a call to action. As I detailed in the Discussion tab of the Games page, I would like to put all of those links into a huge table, which could detail who made it, what event it was made for, release date, and so on. This is going to be a big revision, but I believe it will greatly improve the page. I would like to hear other users opinions on this though, before I go all out.

That would be a great idea! I’m thinking user, name of game, genre, and then it’s arranged from oldest to newest

my problem is how would we choose games to add if we add all those random new games that are half unfinished we’d fill it and it would be hard to find good game on it

I use a screen recording website. Kind of a sketchy approach but it works.

I’m BACK! And I’m back to work. Heres something cool:

Working save slots! You can do any number! Really this is just a proof of concept for Nine Cores 2. That game is probably going to be really big and I want to have a least three slots to store all the data. Of course, the most important thing thats going to be saved in Nine Cores 2 is probably money and weapons, but this system can also help me in the future with more story based games.

About Nine Cores 2, I have an official name and story for it now! The game will from now on be referred to as Nine Cores: The Glorb War (or NC:TGW if I’m tired). This game will follow a human soldier who now wears the super-powered armor of the galactic terrorist known as the Rogue (you in the last game). After the events of the first game, the Glorbulans have declared war on the Terran Republic, and have started expanding rapidly towards Earth. Your task is to handle high-priority missions on Glorbulan infested planets in order to keep them away from Earth.

I am so happy how this game is going along, And I cant wait to do a update on the main game in these upcoming weeks. See you then!
