Introduction
Hello guys, i have a lot of free time on my hands (and energy) so, i wrote an essay about the Wayback Machine! (A website to see previous parts of webpages) I Mostly used Wikipedia to get information. And shoutout to @Taser for getting me into writing this essay, but enough if enough, so let’s get over it shall we?
AN ESSAY ABOUT WAYBACK MACHINE
Section 1: The beginning
The wayback machine is a website used to get information and content that is deleted for the website, it was made in 1990 to 2000 and was publicly released in 2001 by Brewster kahle and Bruce Gilliat in San Franciso, California.

But first, how did the wayback machine store’s webpages and reads them?
They used timestamps! You see, they used timestamp URL to generate webpages resources, like: images, CSS, HTML, JavaScript and etc. and all of it is saved in the cloud. (i think)
The earliest archive was in May the first 1995 (a webpage of BBC) before it was public.
By the end of May 1, 2001, it contained 10 billon archived webpages!

Section 2: Lawsuits
At that time lawsuits were coming up for the wayback machine, the first one was by scientology (The one culture who is criticized) took place in the wayback machine in late 2002 because some of the sites were criticizing scientology so they ask the severs owners to remove them, and instead when viewing one of these archive websites, it shows an error message like “request by the site owner.” soon then the lawyers of scientology/church of scientology demanded the removal but the site owners doesn’t want it remove because they archive websites.
And there’s others like Suzanne Shell, Daniel Davydiuk, FlexiSpy and Healthcare Advocates, Inc. but the last one replied a violation of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) and the CFAA ( Computer Fraud and Abuse Act) because they defended a client from a trademark. Explaining all of them will that take me a long time, so we just have to cut here.
Section 3: 2010s
in 2011 the wayback machine was improved, with a brand-new interface also, they increase the storage from 600 petabytes to 700.
in October of 2013, a new feature was introduced the “save page now” which save the webpage way faster.
in July of, 2016 JavaScript was no longer counted of a webpage, but the other one’s remained.
in October of 2019, users were limited to 15 archives per minute.
Section 4: 2020’s
in October of 2020, the website started fast-checking.
in January of 2022, ad severs are disable from capturing. (to not annoy people with ads)
in 2025, the webpage reached 1 trillion archives later this year they celebrate it but there was trouble, resulting in an 87% drop in page capturing among news reporting it.
and lastly but not least, by February of 2026 The New York times block the wayback machine because of AI scraping.

i had a weird dream today about me playing TF2 ( i cant ), but like it was a also weirdly combined with Rec Room, and yeeps, and like my older sister joined, and we played cards, and like I asked her about if she played quake teamfortress, and she said yes, and a video popped up above her, and I spotted the username alexk (not pinging because i’m not sure if people wanted that) and then i woke up.

Alright, as it turns out, I officially move into university in 2 weeks, so the next Marvel-Of-Software-Engineering essay that I post in this topic will probably be the last one I do for quite a while.
On that note, the next essay will be about the influential programming language C. One of the most popular and fast (in terms of runtime/execution) languages that people use in Software Development. That specific language also powers most of the Operating Systems that we use today, like Microsoft Windows. There are quite a lot of reasons as to what made C such an impactful language, and what gave it such a fast execution speed.
Of course, just because I’m moving off to university does not mean that I’m ending the Marvel-Of-Software-Engineering series. It only means that progress will be taken down a notch. I still have quite a decent number of possible ideas that I really want to write about. For example:
- Microsoft Windows (Revolutionary Operating System)
- Java (Revolutionary Programming Language)
- Redis (Revolutionary Special Database)
- Etc.
