ADVICE FOR HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN
Summer Break is almost over, so I figure that a lot of you guys are starting School soon. In particularly, it seems that a good chunk of y’all is entering Freshman Year of High School. Anyways, I graduated as Class of 2026. So, in my mind, I basically thought. Why not give these freshmen some advice from what I learned in the past 3 - 4 years?
PIECE OF ADVICE #1: PRIORITIZE SPECIFIC CLASSES OVER OTHERS
This might just be some unconventional advice for a High Schooler, but based on my own experience, it saved a ton of stress. There will be times in which your schedule will contain a highly rigorous class (let’s use AP Physics C as an example), and there is another class that is extremely easy. Now, let’s say that you have a test tomorrow for both AP Physics C and that easy course, which one are you going to spend more time studying? Unless you’re an actual genius, you’re probably going to want to spend more time studying for the AP Physics C one since it is the more impactful one. Granted, it is still wise to spend some time studying for that easy course’s exam since it can still tank your grade if you bomb it, but that should be lower down the totem pole.
Personally, here’s how I would handle the entire prioritization process:
- 2 - 3 hours studying for the AP Physics C class.
- 1 hour studying for the easy class.
PIECE OF ADVICE #2: EXTRACURRICULARS ARE EVERYWHERE
At most High Schools out there, they host a variety of clubs and meetings (e.g., student council). A lot of counselors will strongly encourage students to join these school clubs. In my experience, though, most of the clubs felt extremely lackluster and were undergoing massive budget cuts, so I really didn’t find too much value in these activities. The way that most High Schools frame extracurricular activities are either part-time jobs or Clubs that have you stay 45 minutes after school. This is all a very limited view, as long as you’re doing something outside of schoolwork, it counts as an extracurricular activity. Let me give you a list of several possible extracurricular activities:
- MakeCode Forums Member: yes, this counts as one. If you’re spending time interacting in the forums outside of your school schedule, then why not list this?
- Discord Bot Programming Project: A Discord Bot usually requires a lot of maintenance on the developer’s end, so one may probably have to spend time outside of school working on this.
The main takeaway from this section is that don’t limit yourself to any specific type of extracurricular. If you dive a bit deeper, then you’ll find a goldmine of opportunities that will simply come to you.

Yes! It is mostly information sessions and icebreakers, which are annoying but also fun. I played frisbee with people and my roommate is very loudly talking to himself about fantasy football which I think is funny. It is raining right now, so a bit dreary, which is why I’m back on the forum playing old games, but it’s really nice with the window open.

I know! Speaking from experience, sports take up most of your free time (and study/homework time), so unless you’re really committed, I wouldn’t recommend it if you value your grades

Alright, I guess that I should share my plans for the Marvel-Of-Software-Engineering series for when I move into college within the next couple of days.
Truth be told, I do plan on ending the Tech Essay series after a specific point in time. When that happens, it will likely be at the 18th installment that I’m planning to be about: World Wide Web. So far, the Programming Language C marks the 10th essay in the series, so I’ll probably pump out 8 more text walls before I finally turn in. So far, I have brainstormed a couple of ideas to add to the queue. I’m still consulting with a few friends regarding the final decisions for each essay.
Speaking of the queue, here are the next 2 Marvel-Of-Software-Engineering (#11 and #12) essays that I will be doing for sure.
- Essay #11 => Java
- Essay #12 => Redis
Here’s the rest of the brainstormed installment ideas that are still under consideration. Essay #18 is probably a guarantee, though.
- Essay #13 => Either Linux or Compilers
- Essay #14 => Either Google Chrome, Gmail, Docs, or Translate
- Essay #15 => (A Powerful Game Engine, still brainstorming options)
- Essay #16 => Either Facebook, Roblox, SnapChat, or Netflix
- Essay #17 => Either Apple’s iPhone, Nintendo Switch, Apple’s OG Mac, or Nintendo Game Boy
- Essay #18 (FINAL) => World Wide Web

I want to use GitHub at school so badly- its reasonable its banned (cheats for websites like blooket, proxies, etc) but that also leaves things that actually help for websites like makecode arcade :<
