Detective Beetle dev

About 8 months ago, I had the idea to make a detective game with procedural animation.

The game will be about a detective beetle that has to move into a worm colony. He discovers a crime case that needs solving. He has to go around looking for clues, talking to locals (and not just worms), and collecting evidence of who would’ve committed the crime.

I was really excited when things started to come together, and I wanted to share it with the community as a group project for anyone who would like to help!

I’m going to finish this project about the same way I finished my Hair Salon game, just in a longer stretch of time.

I’m going to follow in the footsteps of @Octodemon and @danger_kitty and only give sneak peaks for the first post.

This next one is concept art for an idea I have for the game. In the game, I think it would be cool if you want to unlock certain things or clues, you need to interrogate 2 characters in the same room.
That way they share information about each other:

Like I said, anyone is welcome to help, share ideas or input whatever they think! :boom:

So will it be like a story-based game? Also i realy like the idea of it happening with worms, and beatles and stuff instead of people! I saw someone use inverse kinematics for drawing spider legs, and i recreated it with chatgpt (im lazy) and i think you could implement something simmilar (if you want ofc)

I havent seem pretty much any procedural animation in makecode arcade, im really interested what will you do

Yeah! I was hoping to add some characters that use IK physics!
That’s pretty good for chatGPT! :joy:

Yep, it’s going to a story-based game. If you’ve seen the game The Dig, I like the way the player gets to use ideas or thoughts as the object of conversation. I’d like to implement that into my game.

You can help design characters if you’d like! I want some of the characters to be like tourists. maybe a dragonfly comes into town and cant leave because technically he was there during the crime scene :open_mouth: or something like that.

yeah… still trying to figure out how I’m going to make it look like 2. I’m using my image mapping extension to draw an outline over the screen of that pink color, using richard’s Drawing utils.

This looks really cool! Keep up the good work!

you could have them start their physics at different times if that makes sense, or one of them has more gravity. Maybe add some randomness to the animation? I feel like actually changing the art wouldnt work (unless it’s lighting).

that was just worm creation test!
I’m not sure what I could do. I never thought of lighting! That might actually be the solution to it.

W art but the worms could use some more segmentation is that it to make them look wormier

That guy was woofwoof

In your defense they look like they are glued together

You could use the image mapping extension made by yourself to add some lighting

To reply to you comments @TheEarth, I’m not sure what you mean by “wormier”. And I’m not sure my image mapping extension could help with that, I’ll see what I can do.

To get things kind of started with everybody, here are some important polls:

Mechanics we should include:

  • Ideas/Memories as Objects in conversation
  • Personal-life things to take care of (e.g. laundry, sleeping)
  • Interrogate two characters at a time
  • Day/Night cycle to talk to certain characters
  • Dial in-game phone numbers
  • Personal notes journal
  • I have an idea!

Should this story be deep or simple:

  • Deep
  • Simple

Make it more segmented by making the bottom of each segment separated

I think it would be cool if there was a stealth mechanic where you can trail someone but if they see you ur busted or something
