Sprite Stars (a competition)

A while ago I mentioned that I would soon host an unofficial game jam similar to the legendary Coder King, this is that game jam…

Here’s how this is going to work: (prepare to read)

Sprite Stars is a 5 stage competition where each stage will have it’s own theme that contestants will have to make a game with.

Now… How will the games be judged?

For this competition I’m introducing a new star based ranking system.

Judging

Games will be judged based on these 4 qualities:

  • Gameplay
  • Art
  • Complexity (being simple could be good too)
  • How well they match the theme

Each of those 4 qualities will be rated out of 5 stars, the game with the most stars will be the winner.
If there is a tie then there will be a community vote that awards one star to whoever wins the vote.

In the finale contestants will be ranked not only by how many stars they earn in the finals but also with all their past stars combined.

Elimination

Each stage will eliminate some contestants, this is how many will be competing in each stage:

  • Qualifiers: maximum of 15
  • Elimination: 10 contestants
  • Quarterfinals: 8 contestants
  • Semifinals 4 contestants
  • Finale: 2 contestants

Contestants will be ranked based on how many stars they have earned in the current stage, the contestants with the least stars will be eliminated.

Now it’s time to talk about the rainbow star

The rainbow star will be awarded to the contestant that the community thinks made the best game and will be redistributed each stage.
It is an extremely important item because not only does it grant whoever earns it 5 extra stars but it also makes whoever has it immune to being eliminated in the next stage.

Things to note:

  • Immunity is not active in the semifinals or finale.
  • Extra stars do not count in the finale.

Themes

Themes in this competition are a bit different than usual, not only will you have to make something based off the theme but also whatever the theme’s challenge is.

Here’s an example of a theme challenge:

You cannot make a platformer. (there may be easier or more challenging themes)

Now for the pings…

Requested to be pinged:
@Rune @VoxelMaster64 @Seal_dev @GoObErsandwichdude64 @engineer703 @radgrapes1 @Unicornalena

Nominations:
@randomuser @Astro @ScriptScraper @TeddyB @LazerTag2

…yaaaaaaaayyyy

I accept!

Can I still compete, even though you ping me?

This is undoubtedly the best introduction to an unofficial multi-stage game jam that I have seen for a long time :star: :star: :star: :star: :star: . The terms and conditions involved for each elimination round are well stated. The judging/results system is nice and clear. So on and so forth. Judging by what I have seen so far, this looks like something professional, which isn’t exactly common for most unofficial game jams hosted on the forums. I really look forward to seeing this entire thing play out.

Also, one thing. I think many know about this. But, there is very likely going to be a lot of forfeiting in between each elimination stage. So, you might have to compromise a few things, like skipping a bunch of planned stages, or having less/more people than expected entering each round (e.g., 4 people entering the finale of something).

Eye eye, captain. May the best makecoder win!

You may need to elaborate a little on the rules, when will the qualifiers begin?

How did you do that me too button? I’ve never seen something like that before.

Let’s gooo, time to get five stars on art every time

I accept too!

o my gosh, I was a being little unclear… heh, heh sorry about that!

I meant to say:

Can I compete, even though you didn’t ping me?

If i can’t be a judge I will be a competer

ima do this but im so bad at art that ill lose first round

In the qualifiers anyone can compete, yes.
I said maximum 15 competitors but I could increase it depending on how many people want to compete.

Also more nominations: @WoofWoof @ChimbroDaPro @Bilangus @redSprite @BLADEr @swirlix @Spike @1978monkeynutze @Studio_of_Sword @kirbob

Cool im pinged!

This looks it will be fun! Can’t wait for it to start :duck:

I might also compete in this depending on what the first theme is.

By the way, when will the qualifiers start?

ooooo pretty stars
I must have them

No.

I already have a plan for this, if someone is unable to compete then someone that was previously eliminated will be allowed to take their place.

I’ve never seen anything like it before either I also don’t know how it got there and I can’t see who pressed it.
I have a feeling @AlexK has something to do with it but I don’t know.

Now. starts making qualifiers announcment…

By the way @TheEarth you’re still a judge.

Looks like it’s the “wrap content” feature.
