šŸ Weekly Topic: The Deserted Island Question

Hi everyone! So sorry that I missed weekly topic last week, we had a short week here and it threw me off a bit, but we’re back this week and we hope you have a great last week of February!

This week, we’re going to talk about the classic deserted island question. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 items would you take with you and why? I always really enjoy seeing what people have to say for this because you get a glimpse into what they value and how they problem solve. I’m going to say that in this case, the things that you can bring have to be the size of a standard backpack or smaller. This way you can’t just say that you would bring a boat. Side note, when I first heard someone say that they would bring a boat, my mind was blown; I never even considered that an option when approaching this question.

What would you bring? Let’s chat about it!

Here are a couple of ideas (maybe not good) expressed in emoji:

  2. Food, incase of hunger use it.
  3. Water, drink incase of thirst.
  4. Food, find the way home and possibly call for emergency services.

Wait… Can I change my answer? I want ice cream too

A flare gun, a satellite phone, a fire lighter, a machete, and a pair of binoculars, 'cause I might as well enjoy the birds on this remote island while I wait to be rescued.

If I were thinking logically, probably a computer, solar panels, and one of those Elon Musk Starlink satellite dishes, so that I could watch YouTube post games on the forum while I wait for rescue, and then I guess some food and water.
Thinking illogically, my favorite kind of thinking, I would bring {insert 5 favorite forum members here} and we would have a party! Then it would probably turn into some Lord of the Flies type adventure after that, and when we all got back we collab on a game about our adventures, which would never get finished because collabs never get finished lol

I would bring a Jetpack, and spare fuel
heheh
…Unless this island is off the coast of Capetown then I may or may not be in walking distance to my relatives house, IF it was the same island or not

Bro did not read the rules :skull:
You can’t bring anything bigger than your average backpack! A BOAT DOES NOT FIT IN A BACKPACK :expressionless:

What 5 items that I would bring hmmm…
I’m going to have two self rules for this
Rule 1 I can’t bring anything to allow people to send something on day one like a phone but I can bring stuff to show nearby planes where I’m at, something like a flare gun is allowed
Rule 2 No easy escapes like an inflatable raft if it could even fit in a backpack to begin with
1 I would want a metal pot so I can boil water over a fire, to store water, or to collect rain water
2 An knife or a hatchet so I can cut down things like trees preferably coconuts from trees (I wanted to put a reference to the Coconut song here but I couldn’t think of anything oh well) to use for stuff like fire wood or to defend myself from what ever’s on the island
3 An solar powered flashlight if those things are even real so I have a way to see in the darkness and try to alert an plane flying over head that I’m here
4 An fire starter, I think this one’s self explanatory
5 An tent cause I have no idea how to make a home out of sticks
If I can’t bring one or more of these items for any reasons here my other picks
6 An compass so I know can navigate the island easier
7 An fishing net so I can catch fish

A teleporter

For the complex books I recommend Lord of The Rings with all the books in one: Not even I could get through that one, so be warned.

Then make it an inflatable boat and sacrifice one of the items for an inflator!

This question is an interesting one. I like the backpack idea to keep things limited. I’ve always avoided this question because people are never specific about rules. So I will make a different list of 5 items for each possible variation of reasonably made rules.
Rules that aren’t mentioned:
Getting off the island: allowed or no
Making boats
Rescue team
Are you stranded or is it a survival game where you know you’ll come back
Is making electricity allowed

So, with said rules we will make:
A list assuming you can’t get off the island unless rescued but they can’t see you easily, electricity is not possible in this scenario.

We will also give a budget to make sure no pop-up mega yachts come up.
Budget can vary but I’ll give 1,000 USD per list of things.
We will also say you used the biggest thing you could find at dicks sporting goods to carry the 5 items. We will say it’s this if you really need a reference. This bag is not an item and can’t be used for the challenge other than to carry things to the island.

Now we can finally start.
Before we just name things we need to think of the basic human necessities. The big two are food and water. The food must be cooked if it is anything other than plants/vegetation. Here you may say ā€œWell you don’t need to cook fish silly. Humans eat sushi all the time!ā€ To that I say, ā€œNo that’s a myth sushi is expensive because it gets treated so you can eat it raw.ā€
Getting back on topic you need to know what plants not to eat. We will say you have this knowledge, but starving people can make irrational decisions. The water is fairly straightforward. The typical idea for this challenge is a deserted island in the ocean I’m gonna pick a spot on the map for reference. 5.64082° S, 155.87863° W Starbuck Island.

:arrow_up_small:Average coastline

We can assume the water is mostly clean, but you need a way to separate the salt from the water. I was thinking of using common chemicals, but each one would count as another item, so I looked for more natural ways of removing the salt. This brings us to our first item. A black tarp.
Items used 1
You may be thinking ā€œhow will a tarp help usā€. The black tarp has a few cool tricks normal tarps don’t have. The color black is made by reflecting every color of visible light on one spot. The suns energy is naturally more attracted to black because of this and heats it up much faster. After some tests I can remember from 2nd grade wrapping material in this tarp and suspending it we can create a makeshift oven, which can cook food and remove salt from water. The one take-away is a tarp alone might not be enough to fully heat anything so I will also bring a bottle of aloe vera.
Items used 2
The aloe vera is used to focus the light onto one point making it possible to heat the tarp up much more. In addition to the reason, I just stated there is one more reason for choosing aloe vera. Aloe vera can be used to heal cuts and wounds as well as stop some skin irritation. So, if you get hurt traversing the vast mostly empty Starbuck Island, you’ll be (somewhat) safe from cuts and wounds.
Tarps can be used for many other purposes too including shelter, hunting, and protection from wild animals.

Tarps however aren’t the best choice for hunting animals, so we need a plan for this. A healthy meal must have 3 of 5 food groups in it. To make things easier we will use the law. Specifically, the law regarding school lunches. We need a certain amount of fruit in the meal. (The easy part is the loopholes schools use) In America tomato products like ketchups count as tomato and tomato counts as fruit so by eating a couple ketchup packets (according to the USA) you had a lot of fruit.
If we want 3-5 food groups in a meal, we need to think because there are only 2 groups on the island the meat/protein and the fruit. The meat can come from fish and a few local species of bird, however where would we find the fruit? There is hardly anything on the island. Let’s look at the few plant species on the island: A few flowers, bushes, young palm trees, and bunch grass. AHA! One of the bushes is called the Cordia subcordata bush. It’s a bush that produces lemon-like fruits.

I think 2 food groups should be enough as long as the department of agriculture doesn’t find me.

The last part of getting food is well… getting the food so a good tool to catch fish and birds alike is a spear. A spear could be used to catch fish in the water and catch sitting birds.
Items used 3

Now we can move onto a fun item.
The human brain needs regular exercise to stay mentally and physically well. I think I would need something to keep my head busy so… I WOULD ALSO BRING A DECK OF CARDS! It fits in the bag, you can play so many games, come up with card tricks, and SO MUCH MORE!
Items used 4

Lastly, I would need a way to let rescuers know I’m in need of rescue so I would grab a good old 2-way radio.
Items used 5

Well, that’s what I would do.
