[Announcement] MakeCode Arcade Mini Game Jam #29 - Game Show Jam!

Hey folks!

Since this month started on a Tuesday, we’re announcing the mini game jam today instead of on the traditional “first Monday of the month”. Mostly, we just wanted to make sure that anyone who wanted to code over the long weekend would be able to! Anyways, onto the jam!

This month’s theme was requested by multiple people. That’s right, it’s time for Game Show jam!

Now normally when I write up these posts I like to list of a bunch of example games that adhere to the theme mostly as an excuse to list a bunch of obscure games from my childhood. This theme makes that a bit tricky because most game show games are home versions of an actual televised game show rather than standalone works. So in that spirit I’m going to list all of the Nickelodeon game shows from my childhood instead of video games!

Some examples of “good” game shows are:

  • A game show where you run through a temple to get a golden idol and people in all black suits might jump out and grab you in what was one of the scariest things young richard could possibly imagine like The Legends of the Hidden Temple
  • A game show with the catchiest theme song of all time where you have to do physical challenges and climb up a giant mountain covered in smoke called the Aggro Crag, d-d-d-do you have it? GUTS!
  • A game show where you have to fish flags out of a giant nose and get buckets of slime dumped on you and your entire family like Double Dare 2000

…or you could make up your own non-nickelodeon game show where you solve trivia questions or spell words or spin a giant wheel or whatever and there is no slime involved AT ALL. It’s up to you!

Anything that is based off a game show or resembles one is all good!

Rules

  1. Games should be built in MakeCode Arcade
  2. Games should clearly adhere to the theme without the need for any extra explanation
  3. Keep the games PG: no NSFW, offensive, or excessively violent content.
  4. You must be at least 9 years old to participate.
  5. All games must be submitted by someone who is at least 13 years old. Younger students are welcome to participate, but it must be in partnership with an adult and with parent permission.

You have three weeks to enter! The jam will close at 11:59 PM PDT on Thursday, July 24th 2025. As always, we will be playing all of the games on livestream on the last Friday of the month.

Submit your games by posting them in this thread!

p.s. we’ve made quite a few games based on game shows on live stream over the years! like supermarket sweep, wheel of fortune, and takeshi’s castle
