Hoplings™

hello, player, and welcome to the world of hoplings! join ryan, the cheerful hopling and main character of the game, as he jumps, sprints, dives and ground pounds his way through each level, finding all the pages necessary in order to restore the book he and the other hoplings live in and go home! A and B are assigned to the J and K keys respectively, and the D-pad is controlled with WASD. good luck, and have fun! stay creative, brainiacs!

Looks great! Hands probably need some smearing or you could add another frame to make it smoother but the overall movement is really smooth. (also why j and k for a and b??)

thank you, i’ll work on it! and also, J and K are A and B because most people are going to have one hand on WASD and the other on IJKL. im just taking people’s common habits into consideration.

…also it’s comfortable for me. i used a freeform keymapping extention, so if you want, you can go into the code and edit the keymappings to your liking.

Dang this looks nice already with the simpler style and even smoother moves and it’s just a flat zone!

Just continue using the older devlog. Why do you have to create a new topic to talk about your game? It’s just cluttering the forums

hey, brainiacs! the new update for hoplings just came out!

changelog
-wall jumping and diving

how wall jumps work now:
press A on a wall to kick off of it in a more vertical direction, or hold B and jump off for some more horizontality!

how diving works now:
press B while airborne to dive forward and slightly up, or hold down before pressing B to dash downward instead of upward!

-new VFX
-coins
-some more really nice pixel art and animations!

if you wanna play the newest version, click the link above OR go to the original! if you don’t wanna play it, then i’ll accept just some suggestions on what to add next! the next things i plan on adding are slugslimes and boundbots, as well as the green and blue ! blocks found in the original. ground pounding is gonna change, as you’ll need to press down and A at the same time, instead of just down. the reason for this is the new dive controls. stay creative, brainiacs!

just wanted to take the time to say that ryan has 28 DIFFERENT ANIMATIONS, and because i havent gotten the groundpound implemented yet, there’s even more on the way. jesus H christ, i need mental help.

another day, another update!

changelog
  • shortened the coin chain duration
  • scrapped the spinning ground pound
  • improved the puff effect from jumping/diving
what's next?
  • new assets; enemies, pages, etc
  • an improved ground pound
  • actual levels
  • a HUD displaying health, coins collected, points, and pages remaining

no, i will NOT patch out the driftwalk glitch, it’s a feature now.

(driftwalking is a little unintended “taunt” you can do by sprinting and holding down left and right at the same time. the game thinks you’re turning around over and over super fast, so you end up in a perpetual state of drifting back and forth, which looks a lot like ryan is moonwalking.)

hey, brainiacs! this new update is fit to burst with new content! here’s what happened.

what happened.
  • got rid of the angled dive mechanic in favor of a MUCH better groundpound
  • green impact blocks make their grand return
  • pages are back
  • the level has an exit now! at first, it appears as just the spine of a hardcover book, but once you collect all the pages in the level, you can jump into the newly constructed book and press A as if it were a pulse orb to end the level and win!
  • bonking off a wall via diving now gives you a boost upwards for some more creative platforming
what WILL happen.
  • slugslimes – by popular demand – will return, along with their firey variant; the sizzleslime!
  • an actual first level outside of the tutorial
what WONT happen. (cut content)
  • quillbyte will no longer accompany ryan.
  • the boundbots are being cut from the game.

  • there’s a second level now! there is no exit to this level, it’s a sandbox! do whatever you want!
  • pulse orbs are back
  • the 2nd level clears up the controls for the moves that the original tutorial didnt

It’s fantastic! Only 2 issues:

  1. I couldn’t get to the second level because it did the " failed cast on null" bit after it exited the splash screen.
  2. The bit with the groundpound is very temperamental. Sometimes it only breaks 2 blocks, other times four.
