The forum is dying, why?

I hope I get to return to Makecode someday

Bye :frowning:

Trust me because of the fact that this topic alone has lasted this long is probably a sign this forum is not “dying” anytime soon

Haha, totally agree

That’s a very valid point

No, my friend, but I do collaborate with the team frequently. I have a full-time job, and MakeCode is my favorite hobby. I have a feeling you’ll see more information on the recent work that I’ve been doing with the team very soon.

hmm, i’ll have to check next year then.

I know that this has been an old problem, and mostly fixed now. I also know that I am new, and probably don’t know as much about the forum as other people. I am a very quick reader and I have already read through a bunch of old topics. A lot of the time I see people coming on for some quick problem and then leaving, seeing making a user as a way to get help for their projects. This is great, but the forum rarely gets new users who stay. A lot of people who used to be on here are gone, who were the ones making the great games. I feel like usually the makecode forums will continue to decline in quality unless we fix one of a few problems.
Do we want new users who are more involved in the community? If so then we need to find ways to teach them how to make good games, so not everyone has to figure everything out for themselves. Maybe some more advanced tutorials that run through what to do to make an advanced game, but sort of leave how to do it up to the user? Something like-
Use the for element value block to spawn an enemy on each of the egg blocks.
Just slightly less structured than the current tutorials. I know this would be a lot of work, so this is just an idea. We also probably need more of a link from makecode to the forums, because I didn’t even know about it until I searched up answers and extensions. I am glad that the problem is mostly fixed, but this is just me writing a big chunk of my thoughts down. I personally am going to try to add value to the forums in the form of many quick demos, and maybe a couple of big games.

maybe I could create a series where i break down some of the complicated(ish) code from robot survival or the absolute monstrosity of code from card delver
Would have annotated code to open up and tinker with as well as an explanation with some words. A bit like my [Tutorial] Making an Enemy Follow Multiple Sprites :snake:
this applies to anyone who’s coded a big game, would be cool to reveal the cool methods behind the game mechanics or just small details actually.

word dump of ideas for card delver:
coding the tilted cards in hand, coding a single sprite inventory with draw to image, using nested arrays to store enemy data, coding debuffs and their positioning, coding music with pausing, outlining sprites procedurally, procedual map generation, optimising sprites (tho jedi and woofwoof could help with that far better me), etc

however, coding is only one part of game design, you need to be at game design and thinking of how a player (not just you) would interact and play the game.
Also just planning stuff, there’s a good reason why card delver has a spreadsheet of the cards, items, relics, summons, enemies, bosses and events, if i didn’t plan it out i’d definitely either a. forget it or b. not have thought abt it at all
idk there’s honestly so much stuff to talk about game dev is so complex you need to be a lot of things to create an actually enjoyable game

That would be amazing!!! Some games have very complicated code that could really help people who are looking to get better at coding. Even a page of demos using cool extensions would be great. Just to help people realise what is possible.

Are the forums really dying?
of course people are going to leave even popular people, but new ones will take their place. It’s inevitable that people leave, I bet smaller users leave all the time without anyone noticing. think about it at some point @Sarge is going to leave @Luke will be gone and @_jupiter will be doing something else. maybe instead of looking in the past we should look forward to the present, new users join everyday. The forums might not be what it once was but its still great. the community Is kind and supportive! So no, the forums is not dying.

At this point the forums aren’t really “dying”, but my take on it is that even when we lose experienced coders, we want new users to be accelerated in their learning. Just so it doesn’t take years to get people as good at coding as the people who leave. I guess it isn’t necessary to have new users replace old ones, but you probably don’t want people to get worse as an average. I think what I have been trying to say is people will probably want to be more involved with makecode if they see what cool stuff they can do early, since a lot of people get involved via school. And if we have an influx of newer users wanting to learn, we get more good games being produced and a better community.

The forums aren’t really dying anymore
(Semi-Related Side Note: I’m still alive and regularly check the forums, I just don’t post anything)

I can agree, I got involved because of school. my coding skills were less than bad, I didn’t even know how to place walls or make a sprite jump! But now I am creating really cool games I didn’t even know I could make! And because of makecode I see a further job in coding at some point.

…smiles heartily…

This is one of the main reasons why MakeCode was created. We need a lot more computer scientists … and we will continue to need them for the foreseeable future. When more people see computer science and work with the broad spectrum of skills in that space … especially in fun and interesting ways … then, hopefully, more people will study computer science and, eventually, enter the field.

Coding is just one aspect of computer science … but coding is a great place to start! I’m looking forward at both the growth of the MakeCode family as a coding environment and also its expanded reach into other areas in computer science. Stay tuned … I know I have a lot planned in the next year or two, and that’s just me! The proper MakeCode team has a lot of things on the docket in that time frame, too.

Most importantly, stay involved! We love hearing about (and seeing!) your creations and your questions. For all of you who have “graduated” from MakeCode but still visit the forums: We love to hear your stories, too, and would love to hear feedback about MakeCode … and, if you have ideas, on what we can add or create to enhance the skills that you currently need as you work in other environments. We also just want to hear you brag about new things that you are doing and learning!

(Puts hand on shoulder) “guys, I will always be here, on the forum. This forum is great and friendly (Even if no-one responds to me on my topic), and even if the WHOLE forum somehow get wiped out by a volcano (somehow) I WILL be there, always hangin’ with my buds. I come to the forum every day, in hope any interesting is going on. Makecode Arcade has never failed me. Except when it destroys all of my code when I log in! Good 'ol makecode. What I’m getting at is I will always be here for you guys :smiling_face_with_tear:.”

Makecode Arcade is what drew me to computing, my love for dragging blocks eventually turned into a love for debugging CSS script…and even now,…, even now I love the editor who raised me up!
