đź‘‘ MakeCode memorial - a tribute to the the important members who left the forum

Hey guys, bit of a different project today!

I’ve been on the forums since 2020, and I’ve first created my account in early 2021 (January). Since then, I’ve witnessed many topics, projects, games, initiatives and general development in the community. I’ve watched the community grow, to say the least. Now of course, I’m not here since the beginning, which would be in 2019, after the migration from the Discord server - but I’ve still seen so much development and what I’d deem the “golden age of MakeCode”, during the summer of '21.

Unfortunately, many users that made that era into what it was have left the forums, and their accounts are now only inactive shells, serving as a remnant of the past. With this post, I wanted to honour the users who were once great but left, and commemorate their effect on the community and their accomplishments.

(P.S. - This list covers the users who are in the top 50 users on the All time leaderboard. The definition of an inactive user is a user who’s not posted in over a year, and hasn’t been seen for over a month.)

  • LP - last post, last posted (month and year)
  • LS - last seen, last online (month and year)

(the number next to the user’s @ is their rank on the all-time leaderboard as of the 29rd of June 2023)

#10 @GameGod (LP: Oct 2021, LS: Dec 2021) - the sheer fact that GameGod still holds the 10th spot on the all time leaderboard, even after 2 whole years of total inactivity and radio silence, shows how important he was to the community. It’s hard to pinpoint one project or game he was know for, as he was very involved with anything going on in the community at the time. He was kind of like me in a way, if you will. Initiating and involving himself in community projects, whether it was about games, collabs, art or such. Also, he placed third in the Ocean jam with the game War subs, as well as participated in a handful of other jams. He was truly one of the most recongizable and influential people of the golden age.

#17 @Kat (LP: Dec 2020, LS: Jan 2022) - Now, if there’s anyone who’s name is brought up when you’re looking for a wholesome and positive figure, involved in the community and passionate for art, there’s nobody quite like Kat. Kat was a major artist of the era, participating in big projects and contributing by making art or art related projects. Some of her major topics include the Sprite Library, where users could share and exchange free to use sprites and W1ld : Cats✨, one of her renowned games. She was always friendly with the community, and it was most definitely very dissapointing to say the least when she once and for all dissapeared without a word from the forums in 2020.

#19 @Agent_14 (LP: Feb 2022, LS: Apr 2023) - Agent_14 is one of MakeCode’s fabled technical users, active in many interesting community driven projects, as well as games! Some of his biggest and most remarkable projects include MakeCode Kart, MakecodeCraft - The Virtual Text SMP Server (not strictly arcade related) and The Spy platformer. While his last sighting on the forum was in April of this year, his account is considered inactive by the rules I set, especially considering that his last post was in February of 2022.

#20 @livcheerful (LP: Mar 2022, LS: Apr 2023) - Sitting comfortably on the 20th spot at the all-time leaderboard, right behind Agent_14. Similarly to him, she was also last seen on the forums in April of 2023, and her last post was in early 2022. Now more about her, livcheerful also (or even better) known as Vivian, was a part of the MakeCode team, before departing sometime last year. Since then, she’s abandoned the forum. It’s hard to pinpoint her most monumental achievements while here, because Vivian was a very versatile member here. For the most part, she was best known for often appearing on the streams. Other than that, some of her projects include [new video] How to draw Birds! || Pixel Art School, A few AMAs done by the MakeCode team and Arcade Advanced Stream #211 - Recreating ALL of Chess in ONE STREAM.

#26 @omnisImperium (LP: Jan 2022, LS: Feb 2023) - One of very important and famous game-makers in the MakeCode community. Probably most well-known for his game, GLITCH - which was submitted to the Time jam and won 3rd place.

#28 @FlintAsher (LP: Jun 2021, LS: Jun 2021) - FlintAsher was a game designer and developer on the forum, making notable contributions in the community at the time. His focus was game design and participation in collaborative projects important to the community. Some of his own larger game projects include his rhythm game Rhythm Game MX, Pat the hermit and Blobby McBouncy.

#29 @E-EnerG-Gamecentral (LP: Dec 2022, LS: Jan 2023) - This is a special one to me, since E-EnerG is one of the members I’ve conversed the most with in my early days on the forum. Some of his big projects of course include his famous list of MakeCode operating systems, like Windows collab, MakeCode DOS, Cboy Pumpkin Pie, Cboy V and many others. It’s also important to mention Coding tourney (won by @Taser, I believe), his game jam competition which is thought to be an inspiration for many game jams to come.

#30 @shakao (LP: Apr 2022, LS: Apr 2022) - Very much alike Vivian, shakao, better known as Shanon was a part of the MakeCode team in the past. Shanon unfortuneately left the MakeCode team in 2022, but her contribution prior to leaving was very important none the less. She mostly participated in MakeCode livestreams, also doing some Q&As, small extensions, surveys, community announcements as well as small extensions and mini-projects. Despite the fact she’s left, she will most certainly be remembered as a great part of the team.

#35 @UnderwaterAstronaut (LP: Aug 2022, LS: Sep 2022) - At this point, I’m reaching into the part of the leaderboard where I’m not very familiar with the users that have gone inactive. While I have seen some of UnderwaterAstronaut’s posts and contribution, I’ve had little to no direct interaction with him. Still, I can see why he was a valued member of the community, mostly for his incredible art, but also his unfinished Diver game. Overall, he was an active and popular member of the community at that time.

#36 @cosmoscowboy (LP: Apr 2021, LS: Jul 2021) - One of the true OG users, using MakeCode from its very early stages, and even prior to that, his profile description stating

“I am interested in what MakeCode has to offer, since I was an avid fan of Touch Develop.”

Touch develop being the platform for block-based development predecessing MakeCode (2011-2019), which Microsoft shut down, subsequently replacing it with MakeCode, the platform we all know and love. So, it’s safe to say cosmocowboy was most definitely an early developer in the MakeCode-sphere. As for his actual contribution, he posted a handful of games, some for jams and others independently. Those include Frogging Fun, Shark Frenzy (Ocean Jam) and some others.

#37 @MopishCobra75 (LP: Apr 2020, LS: Apr 2023) - A quite diverse user, both making games all on his own, but also cultivating big community projects, MopishCobra is the user responsible for starting a huge community action, The biggest game (while it was not finished, it was a very big and involved project). He did still make some projects of his own, such as Pac-Man Remix, BasketBall, Rainbow Car 2 and much more!

#39 @Primal_Nexus (LP: Jan 2022, LS: Mar 2022) - While not one of the most active users, Primal_Nexus was still a noticable figure on the forum. The project at the forefront of his profile is probably his Minecraft Arcade series (Minecraft Arcade V0.5!, Minecraft Arcade V0.6!, Minecraft Arcade v1.2 etc). Most of his other activity are replies on other posts, and other interactions with other community members.

#41 @Colethewolf (LP: May 2022, LS: Jun 2022) - Colethewolf (or just Cole), is one of the members who’s prime was in the golden age of MakeCode, on the summer of '21. I mostly remember him for our interactions in the huge community project, Friday night funkin recreation (started by @gusiscute64). Cole is mostly known for his art contributions, working on sprites, ideas, full artwork and more! He also seemed to have an interest in Splatoon (as seen in Splatoon club and Cole in s(p)latoon 2 or 3) and other Nintendo games. Cole has gone inactive in 2022, and hasn’t returned since.

#42 @girlwhocode (LP: Oct 2021, LS: Oct 2021) - Just like Cole, girlwhocode was at the peak of her activity and popularity in 2021. Also alike him, she participated in the FNF project. However, that was not all she was known for, as she was a diverse coder in the community. She made Go back in time (Time jam), Farming simulator, Space adventures and many other games. She also frequently tuned into forum discourse and conversed in the chatting topics, which is why she was so well known!

Well, I suppose that’s about all from the top 50. This topic took SO LONG to make, so I hope it means something to some people, and reminds the OGs of the “good-ol time”, if you will :joy:

Until next time, folks!

Thank you for making this! I think I’ve seen almost all of these people on older topics when I’ve just been looking about and I was always so curious where they all went. I’ve only joined a few months ago so I don’t know any of them so this topic is really helpful.

My favorite coders were probably @UnderwaterAstronaut and @Kat, cause they were really good at drawing. I wish I could talk to them… (In the forums, of course)

He went away for a while, then returned. While he’s not frequenting the forums, he’s still seen around (as noted by @labfox29)

I think @GamerGod was the first person to reply to any of my posts and he left shortly after. Unfortunately I joined after a lot of the oldies left. Respect to them and the newer/continued rising forum members.

To be honest, I’ve thought a lot about the zenith of the forum, especially since I joined too late to experience it. This was a pretty cool topic to discover, since it summarizes the greatest achievements of the illustrious forum members who’ve disappeared. Thanks for making this, @Sarge! I’m hoping that with all of the new, amazing coders on the forum, we’ll be able to make a new golden age for the MakeCode forum!

I respect every coder who has left this forum, I think that now we can make a new generation of makecoders and keep supporting each other!
