Raspberry Pi Zero + Makecode Arcade + USB Encoder

So I have a Raspberry Pi Zero that I wanted to use for MakeCode Arcade projects. I bought this button pack w/ usb encoder in hopes to use with this setup:

I loaded the arcade-cardboard firmware from here: https://learn.adafruit.com/makecode-arcade-with-raspberry-pi-zero/firmware#firmware-3-1

I connected the buttons and joystick to the encoder and then plugged the USB cable from encoder to the Pi Zero. However when the Pi Zero starts up to the configuration menu nothing seems to be recognized and I am stuck there. I am sure there is something else I need to do, like map the buttons, but I am not sure how or even if this setup is going to work.

Does anyone have any advice?

Check out this page for detailed instructions on setup: https://arcade.makecode.com/hardware/raspberry-pi/setup

There’s a test program you can install which will show you which pins to connect where. The video under the wiring section demonstrates how to use the test program.

Hope that helps!
