I’m trying to utilise the skillmaps in my digital technology class, however, students and myself are encountering the following blank screen when trying to open up any of the skillmaps within Google Chrome.
A blank project or a tutorial will load without issue and we can create fine there, however, each skillmap presents this blank/nested window screen in Chrome. Notably, there is no issue in Microsoft Edge, however, students are using Chromebooks and only have access to Chrome as their browser.
Sorry to hear you’ve been hitting this issue, and thanks for letting us know. I’m trying to reproduce the problem on my end - can you let me know which specific skillmaps you’ve tried? And can you also go to the gear menu, select “About”, and send me a screenshot of the versions you see there? Should look something like this:
Thank you for replying. Above is the screenshot of the about section. I have tried the following skillmaps: Full of Stories, Whack the Mole, Talent Show, Save the Dinos, Burstin’ Balloons, and Monster Truck Racer.
I suspect it’s something to do with the default chrome browser or enterprise settings to be honest. These skillmaps work fine on Edge, or in Chrome when using incognito mode.
Im using a chromebook and it was fine for me, or i might not have been on there at the time (note : I also have enterprise settings because its a school chromebook)
@ShaneRichardson: If you have a machine that reliably reproduces this issue, would it be feasible for you to try one more thing for me? I’m still struggling to get a repro on my end, and I’d like to know if the issue exists in a previous version of arcade. This will help me see if it’s a result of a recent change or if it’s something long-standing. If you have a machine that hits the issue reliably, can you try going to this URL and letting me know if the skillmap loads there: https://arcade.makecode.com/v1--skillmap#mole (note, the /v1 will go to an older version of arcade)
Hi Sparks, thanks for following this up. I have tested the v1 mole skillmap via the link you’ve provided and can confirm that this works as intended - I have been able to open it and access the tutorial without issue. (image below showing this)
If you are able, following the steps outline in this post would be extremely helpful for us to get more info: What to do when you encounter a bug (You can skip Step 1 since there’s no project to share)
Hi again Shane. One thing I wanted to check - are there any extensions installed in the chrome browsers where you’re hitting this issue? If so, which ones, and does disabling them fix the problem?
We don’t use a lot of extensions, however, I have trialed disabling each of these one at a time and then testing a couple of skillmaps to see if it has had any effect.
The extensions we use include:
Mobility Print
Application Launcher for Drive (Google Drive)
Google Docs Offline
Quizizz AI
Read & Write for Google Chrome
Vivi
Having tested the skillmaps against when each of these are enabled/disabled, it appears that this issue occurs when the “Read & Write for Google Chrome” extension is enabled. When this extension is disabled, the skillmaps seem to load without issue regardless of which other extensions are enabled. For added context, unlike the other extensions this one is also installed on each of the students machines so whilst I haven’t tested it on one of those I tested it on my device that was having the same issue. The skillmaps tested in this manner were the whack the mole and talent show.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
EDIT: We had to revert our release due to an unrelated issue. Please disregard, and I’ll update you once the changes are live again. Sorry for the confusion!
Hi again Shane,
Thank you for that detailed analysis. With that information, I was able to get a (somewhat shaky) repro of the issue, and I’ve checked in a change that should hopefully fix it.
If you can, it’d be great if you could verify that it’s working better on your end. First, check the version as described earlier and ensure you’re on “arcade version: 2.0.51” (or later). Then try to open a skillmap and let me know if you still see the issue!
Thanks again for all the help investigating this issue.
Thanks for the info, Parkour. When the skillmaps fail to load, are you seeing the same two-header-bar view, or is it different on your end? And are your students logged in?
It’s worth trying to see if it has improved at all with the new version (per my comment above), but that fix was rather targeted to a specific scenario, so it’s possible your issue is separate.
